Brought my 88 Sunbird GT Turbo in for routine maintenance. It has only 13,000 miles. I brought it to the Pontiac Dealership that I bought it at in 88.
They found a leak in a turbo seal and replaced the distributor. They said they had to use an after market one because GM doesn't have them in stock anymore. I probably should have used the car a little more to keep seals lubricated. At any rate after I picked up the car, it stalled at every traffic light on the way home. (It is NOT the TCC problem that is so common, that was fixed last year). The problem now is that every time you stop for over a few seconds, the engine just quits. It starts right up again, but continues to stall at every stop.
The dealership has had the car now for THREE weeks and they can't find the problem. You'd think a Pontiac dealer with over 100 mechanics should be able to find the problem.
My common sense tells me that since it did NOT stall prior to them replacing the distributor and it does now......its probably the distributor.
Any ideas? I'd like to get the car back this year.
I tend to think you are correct in ur assumption.Unless they screwed up the timing with the new distributor or pulled a vac line loose I would recheck ur timing 1st,then I would either take the car back and say replace the part. The timing is crucial and would cause just such a issue.
Thanks for the response. The dealer called me yesterday and said they're going to replace the distributor again. So we'll see what happens
LOL.. I have had that Problem before..

LOL.. Here is the list of replacement parts I Did..
O2 senor
Temp Sensor
Distributor cap and rotor
plug wires and spark plugs
Fuel filter
Fuel Pump al cheap o one.
EGC Valve
Throtle sensor
O2 Senor again.
2nd Fuel Pump a premo one with a NEW TANK as well.
-Intake Sensor <--- Which Make the Big Difference and was the Cheapest Part. Had hasn't stalled out since I changed it!
Next would have been the MAP sensor.. But I didn't need to do it yet..
PS.. The computer isn't as sensitive in these car. So They tend to trip on more of a Major failure.
But I would work from the Intake sensor up.
A few other problem too could be a poor vacuum line connection.
Here is what I notice with these Turbo's..
Being at a Stop and pump the Brakes.. You Can stall out your car..
PS.. I also Cut my Cat conver off.. and Test piped it.

figure the cat conver. was getting plug up..
