When the ac is off it makes a screeching noise I really can't explain the noise!! When ac is on the noise stops! Does anyone else have this problem or have heard of this in their 2.4???

The clutch assembly in the a/c idler assembly is shot. I've seen this a lot lately, as these cars are getting older.

Clutch isn't expensive, the labour will kill you. Requires speciality tools, I'm a handy guy but I won't touch the AC Clutch. I was talkin to one of the people I work with, her dad owns a shop and she was telling me it's rather common on the GMs (already knew that) but more often than not the clutch isn't actually shot, there's a spring that no longer pushes the clutch far enough away, causing a metallic grinding noise. This spring can be regrapped on the car, costs like 50 bucks. My GFs 99 Grand Prix does this too--worse when it's warmer out, I'm going to swing by and see if this air gapping thing is correct

I had this noise a few years back and tried to fix it myself. The guys above that say you need special tools are correct, lol. I broke my compressor trying to get the clutch off and had to buy a used compressor from the classifieds on here.

Had the same problem on my 96 Sunfire GT. I removed the clutch plate and coil from the compressor, pressed the pulley back on, reinstalled the compressor and fixed the problem. No A/C but regained an extra4 MPG. Borrowed tools (full price deposit required) from local auto parts store. Good luck, Dave

Pain in the ass to try and fix. I took my off after i figured out what the noise was coming from, and put a by-pass pulley one. Just buy a new or used compressor assembly.
