HELP!!!!!!!! My '97 2.4lt Sunfire won't start!
Wednesday, May 09, 2007 8:24 PM
First I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire with a brand new Fuel Filter,Brand new Fuel sending unit/Fuel pump,Aftermarket Custom Turbo kit, Venom High Flow Fuel rail,Greddy E~Manage,NGK Iridium Plugs. (Also Automatic)

It won't start, was running fine cut off once during Friday then ran fine again afterwards thought nothing of it However we stayed up late as hell like 3am that night trying to get everything ready/Finished up New 6x9's, Buffing Etc., for Carlisle which I was already pre-registered for but It choose to not run on Saturday morning around 7:30am when we tried to leave then we called various people which included mechanics, friends anyone with some knowledge not like we don't have it ourselves but at this point we sure couldn't figure it out after I though it was the fuel pump relay and that didn't work either that is, Then we tried beating on the gas tank with a rubber mallot to try to get the pump to kick on which at that time it didn't seem to be doing either but that also did not work Now I've replaced Fuel sending unit/Fuel pump,Fuel filter hasn't worked yet hopefully it starts in the morning "but my hope isn't wasting away on that thought" It trys to start it cranks like all hell but won't turn over or completely start we even checked the spark plugs they appear white & dry no fuel residue I will have to check them tommorrow again but any experiances or ideas are welcome at thie point cuz I'm 2 steps away from getting bent & blowin the b!tch up! Thanx,in advance to anyone. I already asked ScruffDog but I may call him with a few more q's tommorrow.

IDK if our cars have one, but a friends of mine had a car that the fuel pump"stopped working" in so he bought a new pump this that and the other thing and it ended being that his fuel pump blew a fuse.

STREET ANTIX, it's coming...

Ignition control Module..........or your fuel pump wiring is fudged. also, maybe the timing?

Re: HELP!!!!!!!! My '97 2.4lt Sunfire won't start!

you need to check the main 3 things, fuel pressure, spark, and compression and go from there. whichever one your missing, thats the problem. if youhave all 3, perhaps timing. my guess is fuel, make sure you have power AND GROUND to your new pump.

i was going to say about the ground wire...alot of times at autozone we get people rippin a bitch about it not working but then find out that the ground wire corroded apart or was not connected properly.

Ground wire on what?^ (The fuel pump which is part of the brand new fuel sending unit that I just put in.)
1. I got what appears to be old fuel in the Venom fuel rail.
2. No fuel appears to have hit the spark plugs yet.
3. 3 Spark plugs were white on the ends but one was about normal color after use for awhile.
4. As for fuel pressure my Venom high flow fuel rail seems to not have one of those
fuel pressure testing stems on it anywhere.
5. I just put my new NGK Iridium spark plugs in tonite they didn't work either.

Any more help would be appreciated thanx guys I'll check out some of this shiznit tommorrow & post back results.

I'M SO F@$@IN PISSED!

How about the wiring harness TO the new fuel pump and sender, this will include the ground wire to the fuel pump?

Here is a link to a PDF which recommends changing this harness when you change the pump assy, many parts places seem to recommend replacement. It seems to be a common problem.

Hope it helps, anyway

Not sure I can help you from here but, have you checked for spark? remove the IDI cover with spark plug boots attach the plugs you took off(you said you replaced the plugs already). Crank it over and watch for spark. Oh, you'll have to atach the IDI cover upside down with at least one bolt for ground. Grap a test light see if you have power to the fuel pump. Also check if you find any type of
burnt or corroded terminals the connector to the fuel pump. Is there anyway you can get a code reader to the car. that would help me helping you out.

Also check and see if your injector harness is connected, broken or even getting power to all ends.

[Now I've replaced Fuel sending unit/Fuel pump,Fuel filter------------ hasn't worked yet ---------------hopefully it starts in the morning "but my hope isn't wasting away on that thought"

2. It tries to start---- it cranks like all hell but won't turn over (Fire)----------or completely start

3. We even checked the spark plugs they appear white & dry no fuel residue I will have to check them tomorrow again]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just checking what you said---1. The new Fuel pump and Filter has not worked yet

--Backed up by 3. No fuel residue on plugs

But 2. The engine is being cranked over nicely by the starter

Surely you will have to ensure that the fuel pump is pumping fuel to the fuel rail before checking/changing anything else?

Already checked that no new fuel getting there either only appears to be old fuel stuck in the fuel rail.
&
Frank Thanx I'll have to check all of that as well.

Turn the key on (don't try to start) and listen for the fuel pump to run. If you can't hear it then it's not getting power.

Check the fuel pump relay in the fuse box under the hood.

You can also undo the fuel line at the fuel rail and turn the key on to see if any fuel pumps through the line.

Also , you might of kinked/pinched one or more of the plastic hoses that run on top of the fuel tank.

great minds must think alike!

Also one more thing tho. What kind of hose did you use going from the pump to the top of the cup. If you used something too long when you compress that it will kink as well. Had that happen!

BTW. The fuel pump does seem to be turning on.
Looks like old fuel still trapped in fuel rail though nothing new it runs out not squirts.
None in the fuel filter or spark plug areas.

Jack the car up and take out the fuel filter (the one over the rear axle),turn the key on to make the fuel pump run and see if any gas squirts out the line from the tank. If it doesn't then loosen the bolts that hold the tank straps tight so you can drop the tank down about 1/2" and see if it works.

Sounds like you have something pinched off somewhere...

Already thought about that too but didn't get around to it yet however somebody else saying it makes me lean more towards doing it again Gary that's what makes you an awesome dude to know. We're definetly on the same page however I've also had several people now tell me they think it has somethin to do with the Ignition Control Module too So I definetly want to check that out as well.

But if your not getting fuel to the fuel rail why chase the Ignition Control Module?
