How much engine movement is normal?

I've got a 2200 OHV in my 1997 Cavy, and some of the threads I've been reading lately about engine mount issues have me wondering if mine are nearing the end. How much movement is typical, and should I be concerned if I'm not having any serious issues? I get a small clunk going into gear, and I find there's a bit of lag follow by a "jerk" when coming off the brake and onto the throttle. The main reason this came to my attention recently is how this affected my Vibrant strut bar installation. Clearance was tight, but I thought it would work -- until I hear metal-on-metal scraping whenever I accelerated. Well now I know why.

I've got a short video I snapped with my digicam, viewing the movement of my throttle body as seen from the driver's side strut tower. I start the engine, rev to 2000 rpm while holding the brake, then cycle from reverse to drive a couple of times.

Yea, Josh, I would recommend getting new mounts, Its looks like youres are wornout, With wornout mounts causes more stress on other parts, What causes them to wearout quicker.

Good Luck.

Carcustoms has the motor mounts for 65 bucks, and as for tranny mounts, I know they have them for the 5speed, but not sure if anyone makes any for the autos.

TTR either has them or is testing them now for the auto

Am I probably looking at the lower dogbone mount as the main source of this "slop"? I'm not familiar with the location of the transmission mount -- is it likely to be playing a big role in this as well? In any case, I would probably be getting my usual mechanic to do any work so I don't need a lot of "how-to" specifics. Just looking for opinions. Thanks everyone.

Yep, typical tranny clunk and jerk with mine.....it's funny when you can feel the engine rock when giving it throttle. Even with just the lower mount I still had quite a bit of engine movement. With the upper mount insert installed with it, it was rock solid. Just got to get used to the vibrations. Haven't messed with the tranny though.

While your there, make sure nothing is rubbing against the engine. (one reason I like the mounts). I've had a hole twice in a coolant line (one was my fault ) and brake line.
