04 Sunfire/ Time for new struts
Sunday, April 29, 2007 8:07 PM
Hello

2004 sunfire. 3 1/4 years old 45,000 kms. I hear the stock struts are cheap and don't last long.
When's a good time to get new ones and what brand should I buy and have installed?

Thanks

Walt

well, i guess the best start is can you tell if they are blown? is the car extra bouncy?

also, if you do replace, are you looking for stock replacements? or a bit of an upgrade?

if their blown you'll be better off upgrading them. it will probably be cheaper. get a nice set of kyb gr2 struts.

heres the link to kyb gr2 struts that stripped was talking about. just scroll down till you see sunfire. its says there for '95-01 but they'll work on any year model sunfire or cavy. i'm looking to get a set myself.

Hi Guys

No they are not blown.
I plan on having the car for another 7 yrs. I know that aftermarket struts just give you a better ride.
I figure I'll have to change them one day, so I was thinking of upgrading sooner than later. Perhaps this summer. I'm sure good quality aftermarket struts will last me another 6 and 1/2 years. This way I can enjoy a better ride for the rest of the time I have my car.

So what are good quality after market struts?

( I may just wait for a sale at Canadian tire and get a set of Munroes.)

Got a set of Midas r2 struts all around, Last a LONG time, and are covered by lifetime warranty (at least in my case).

My stepmom's Sunfire's rear struts were legitimately blown at 50K. Stock 3rd gen J-car struts are certifiably the cheapest pieces of crap in existance. Basically, if the car is old/driven enough to be out of warranty, there's a good chance they're blown.
