My 84 isn't getting fuel for some reason. My grandma just give it to me and its been sitting for almost 8 years. It hasnt been ran or anything since it started acting up on her. She says it would cut off on her going down the highway and she finally just parked it. Anyways I drag this old girl to the house and put 2 gallons of fresh gas in her and I cant seem to get her to fire up. If I pour a little bit of gas into the throttle body it will fire up and run for 2 seconds but quits. I tried this almost 20 times and im still not getting fuel to the engine. I hear the fuel pump pumping and hear everything else up front working like its getting fuel. Now it shows only like 1/4 of a tank but I just put 2 gallons in it so the old gas should be mixed well enough with the new for it to run. I thought about the things like the injector or fuel filter might be clogged but I wouldnt think it would be so clogged it wouldnt run. If anybody can help me on this situation its greatly appreciated.
-maybe the fuel injectors are clogged? from sediment over the year
-disconnect one of the fuel lines by the engine and turn the key to see if fuel comes out that way you eliminate all the stuff in the back part of the fuel system (pump, etc), but it might be an old pump too (not enough pressure)
Well the thing is I dont know which one to disconnect. I unhooked one line on the right side towards the front that looked like a fuel line. I turned on the ignition and nothing squirted out so I dont know. I also noticed a cannister under the a/c filter drier and there was a solenoid type device on that black cannister that was REALLY hot. It almost burnt me when I was feeling around looking for live fuel lines. I dont know if its supposed to be hot like it was but it sure was about to catch on fire. And what would cause it to cut off going down the highway?
Also I cant seem to find any information on this engine. If somebody can tell me things like hp and tq that would be great for me to know. Or if anybody can lead me to a specifications thread on the engine that would awesome too!
I might suggest going out to an autoparts store, library, or book store (amazon.com) and pick up the Haynes manual for the 82-87 Cavalier. It will give you insight where everything is and how to fix it.
yeah go with the haynes manual we had this same problem with a dodge ram tb v8 allthough it did run fine at first but then died. we tried everything even threw sum starter fluid in the tb, woudl fire for a few seconds but then cut out ,we even took it to the local autozone n they tried tellin us it was an o2 sensor ,well we decided to try a fuel pump and the damn thing runs like a charm. Now im thinking about it it could possibly be your fuel pump from sitting soo long gas turns to powder so ur fuel pump had gas in it and from sittin soo long the gas prolly powdered and thats causing you to not get fuel. It's a good thing to change the fluids, plugs and wires while your at it.
Well the thing is I dont wanna start fixing things when they might be working perfectly. Where can I find this fuel line thats going into the throttle body.
It still doesnt tell me where the fuel line is. If it comes to be the injector, how would I go about cleaning it? And again I hear the fuel pump running so I know it should be pumping something.
1st u need to show in ur profile what engine u have and other specific info. Being a 1984 u probably have a 2.0 ohv or the 1.8 ohc eng, the 1.8 is 84hp and the 2.0 is 86 hp. If u want to verify which engine code u have the 8th digit in the vin # is the engine code which is either O or P most likely. That is looking at the vin from the left counting to the right.I would HIGHLY recomm changing the fuel filter that is a 1st priority when the car is not getting fuel but the pump is working!Only when the filter is new and still no fuel then I would pull the fuel inlet line which is the hard line closest to the tps (throttle position sensor) is where ur feed from the tank is.U prob have a model 300 or 500 tbi for your yr model.Gm tended to change things alot mid yr and while u do have a single injector they basically model wise are very similar.Change that fuel filter and see if u have the 1.8 or 2.0 eng based on the vin #.I am guessing the fuel filter is HISTORY and that explains the cars problems prior to and now current problem. And if the engine code is O it's the 1.8 and P is the 2.0.This should get u started, tbi are simple on the first gens I know I rebuilt mine.
Have u done any checks based on the info provided to see if the filter is the issue,or worst case the pump pressure may be to low and u need to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel sending unit. And the fuel pressure should be 13psi at least my 85 specs are and sure with out looking in my books it should be the same.If u have to drop the tank its easy took me 3hrs total to do the job in the drive way that included cleaning up tools etc.
