steering issue, maybe the column?

hey guys. im having a strange problem with the steering gear on my 2005 Z24 92,000KMS.

when i turn the wheel, at any speed you can hear this kind of clunking sound. its not really loud, it almost sounds like the fender liner rubbing the tire, but its not.

the faster i turn the wheel the faster it will make the clunking/rubbing sound. even if i turn the wheel half an inch either way it will make the noise. i tried this last night in a parking lot. it will also make the noise with the car dead stopped, same thing the faster i turn the wheel the faster the noise is.

someone told me that theres a bearing in the steering column, and that goes sometimes, and you will get a clunking sound from the bad bearing.

im not sure if its a huge issue, it started about 2 weeks ago. at first it was on and off. now it is all the time.

thanks for the input guys.

There is a wheel on the column that locks when the ignition is off, the security thingy.. It has a pin that clicks into the wheel. Maybe the pin is slightly out and rubbing on the wheel just enough to click and make noise but not to actually lock? I am sure it has some sort of adjustment. Remove your steering column bezel and see if you can tell what i am talking about. Look for anything that might be rubbing when you rotate the wheel. If this is the case it'd sure suck to have it lock and not be able to steer your car as your driving it....

I guess its possible that the column could need replacing. Mine makes a little whine....but no rubbing or clicking. It seems like noises are just a sign that our cars are alive...worry when it stops making noise all together

^^^^^^^^^ i checked them out when i was trying to figure out WTF the sound was. im pretty sure its coming from the column now. you can only hear it in the car ,not from out side at all. so im looking at a steering column, its cheaper to replace it with a used one vrs getting mine repaired.
