Ok here's the situation. My 2001 z24 is having a very rough idle (shakes redidculously) right now. It only occurs when I am coming to a stop and continues until I start to give it gas. I had just replaced my spark plugs last fall and it reduced the problem for a bit, but now it has gotten worse again. I am going to check the plugs out again this weekend but is that the only possibility? I've heard about the cavy coilpacks going notoriously but am not very familiar there. Also my mpg has dropped to around 24 mpg, which is horrible. If anyone has any experience with this crap, please give a few ideas where to start. Thanks guys!

Is there an engine code? Misfire?
i have somewhat the same problem with my sunfire GT but mine dont quit till i get it above 4000rpm i had pulled up codes for number 1 cylinder misfire and fault in number 1 injector
I actually haven't checked the codes yet (I'm too broke to own a scanner). Will this code be picked up (if it is the problem) if I take it to Auto zone and have it scanned? There is no engine light on. Gracias!

Looking forward for an answer here, to. I posted a similar question and got NO replies. '96 2.2 here, and no misfire, no codes, no 'reports' anywhere except from my backside getting wrong vibes from the engine. Coming up on the (2)00K mile tune up, so most everything is gonna be replaced anyway.
Ok, I took it to get it scanned with the OBDII and threw no codes. So I am assuming this is either a plug problem or coilpack issue. What is the proper way to test the coil packs? I am going to take the plugs out this weekend to make sure there isn't anything crazy there, but I'm a bit lost. thanks!

I'd suggest start with the plugs...solved my problem!
Are your plugs gapped right? Make sure they have the right gap when you pull them out. As for testing the coils all you need is a screw driver and a friend to help you, all you do is stick the screw driver in one spark plug boot at a time and hold the screw driver close enough to the valve cover for a spark to jump, then have your friend turn the engine over, and look for sparks, AND DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING METAL WHEN DOING THIS, because 40k volts jumping through your hand isn't a plesant feeling at all, trust me on that one. Oh yeah and it might be a good idea to replace your fuel filter too.
new wires and stock coil packs shouldn't run more than 75 bucks at parts-o-rama if the plug replacement doesn't help. A faulty coil-pack would probably have thrown a misfire code.
Ok so I am going to check the spark plugs this weekend and look into replacing my fuel filter (which is overdue), but would those contribute to the very rough idle issue I have? The rough idle actually is making the engine sound shaky when it is in in park and neutral.

I'm having the same problem!! I have replaced my coil packs, front o2 and rear o2 sensors. TPS sensor, IAC valve, IAT sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires. I dont know what else to do here. Also, when driving, my coolant gauge needle moves back and forth, while at the same time, all of my warning lights blink on and off.
Please help me
well how about the cam and crank sensors? one of those could be going bad too, a clogged cat converter could be it too
I'm not very experienced in testing in those areas. How would I go about testing those sensors? I'm assuming since I have to test them, they can't be picked up faulty by my OBDII scanner right?

Any ideas guys? Had to revive the post.

Try getting new spark plug wires if your car has them, as they age the conductive materials can break down or moisture can get inside reducing the amount of voltage available to fire the plugs. Hesitation, poor acceleration and idle probelms can be caused by poor spark plug voltages. I know a guy who spent 500$ trying to fix his idle problem, the garage tried everything to no avail. First thing i asked him "how old are your plug wires?' he told me they were the originals from 8 years ago, so i swapped the wires for him, problem solved.
TCC siliniod! spelling is wrong. do a seaarch for it. seems to fit the description. my car does it to. havent tried to fix it yet.
I believe that the 2.4L has boots, not wires? I tore apart the block cover and throttle body to reseal the gasket there, but any ideas?

Daniel Noriega wrote:coils... mine did that.
Shouldn't a coil pack problem throw a code though? I sprayed it with a crap load of throttle body cleaner and it seemed to be alot better, but I did not take it for a spin. We'll have to see tomorrow.

I had a similar problem when i got my Z and i discovered that the spark for one cylinder was arcing in the plastic thing that replaces the spark plug wires(sorry forgot whats its called). I simply replaced it and the other small parts there but i kept the coils though, and problem solved. I hope this helps.

Do you mean the cheap plastic that is surrounding the rubber boots for the spark plugs?

Yea, the big white or black thing, mine was white so when i inspected it i could see a black streak where the spark was arcing to the metal cover on top. I found a pic of what i replaced and it was fixed
Plastic piece. Try letting it idle and open the hood and rev it manually but not past like 3k rpm and listen if there is some ticking when you rev it, try it quick too but not too high! If there is a noticable ticking, which is the sound of the spark jumping away, that plastic thing probly needs replacing.
i was haveing the same problem with my 05 and took to the shop after not being able to fiqure it out and the guy suposedly cleaned my idler plate. which what is that? and also my throttle body and has ran fine ever since.
i aslo know my buddy in his ford ZX2 is haveing the same problem and has tracked the problem down to a bad vacum. if you pump your brakes does the idle go up and stop shakeing?
hope it all works out for ya
Hey Jace, a bad coil pack won't always throw a code, so just because your check engine lite doesn't come on, doesn't mean the coil is not the problem, you may need to take it to a shop that has a monitor system that can watch whats going on with the vehicle while its running, sometimes its money well spent, and less headache in the long run. Also Autozone can only check for codes when the check engine light is on, if it is off our scanners won't find any codes.
