00z-few dash lights on and no fixes...
Monday, April 16, 2007 8:35 PM
my dads 2000 z24 has a few dash lights on and weve been unable to get them to turn off, let alone get them to stay off...

ABS, service, and trac off

we bought a scanner the other day to use on my 98 and it worked great to erase 2 codes (CEL and trac off) and we put it on his car and it said "0 codes" its weird, why wont it read the codes?

weve tried un hooking the battery and all that, still no luck. every once n awhile the lights will all shut off automatically and then they just come back on. so obviously theres something wrong. all the ABS sensors are hooked up, and fluid is full-just put new brakes on it to. and whats really weird, the traction control still works even though it says "trac off"

any ideas?

ok, so how DO u get at least the service light to go off... we've changed the oil several times since owning the car and its never gone out. i know that in certain grand ams and other gm vehicles you put the key to on-wait til the chimes end and press the throttle down 3 times and it clears the code... but it didnt work on this car. couldnt find a reset button nor a reset fuse in the fuse panels either.

The service light in the j-bodies only indicates that you have a head light out, or the DRL are not functioning properly. That is the only thing that will turn this on, not an oil change is needed. for the light to go out, check your headlights and see if any bulb, high or low is out, and replace it. if all light up then see if your drl work. As far as trac and abs, having both of these lights on at once tell me a bad wheel bearing. you need a scanner capable of getting ABS codes, it will tell you which wheel has the ABS problem, replace that hub bearing, and both lights will go out.

wow, you hit it right on....

it DOES have a fog light out, and it DOES have a bad rear wheel bearing and or 2 bad rear's.

would the fog light effect the service light?

im not sure if fog lights are hooked into the service light. i dont have fogs on mine, so no personal experience. I would replace the rear wheel bearing that is bad, and it will take care of the abs and trac. I would scan the ABS codes just to double check which wheel bearing it is. it will come up as (LR, RR, Whichever wheel) wheel speed sensor error.

glad to help.
