Who have work on your car is often the difference between "Hey sweet car!" and "Parts for sale!". Choose your mechanic carefully.

General Motors constantly updated and modified the 2.2 during the 1990s...

If one had an "early" 1990 engine, it may not have all the same components
as a "late" 1990

It would be scary to try a later model head replacement...

I'd recommend, stay with the same and hope the original can be properly serviced
and put back...

all the heads up to 97 should bolt up just fine, 95 was the last year of the vacuum egr for the 2.2 so i woudlnt go any newer then that or you have to swap out that block on the side where the t-stat goes.
if you really want to play it safe get one from a 90 or 91 2.2 but i've seen a 94 head on an 89 2.0 motor, the main difference is that new heads got smaller valve stems and had little ears notched out of the intake ports for the MPFI injectors but all your manifolds will bolt up just fine to a newer head

hope that helps
