1996 Sunfire GT. My A/C system doesn't work and the compressor clutch is making noise. Can the compressor be used with the clutch plate and coil removed? I don't have money to fix the A/C system at this time and need the compressor in place for the serpentine belt system. Thanks, Dave
you do not need the compressor, run a shorter belt

On the 2.4L you need to buy a a/c delete pulley. You can't just run a shorter belt.
That's funny why is my car running right now with a 350k5 belt?375k5 is stock size for my 98 2.4 with a/c.Yes you can run a shorter belt on a 2.4 although my new belt is squealing a little here and there so just try different belts, maybe a 355k5

The compresor bearing maybe causing the noise if so it shouldn´t be too expensive.

Your right Tom, I need an idler pulley in place of the compressor for the serpentine belt to work. Thanks for everyones response. Dave
No Dave,Tom is not correct, many here run shorter belts,do you not listen or search?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to irritate you, but my Helm's factory manual shows an idler pulley in place of the compressor for the 2.4 and a shorter belt for the 2.2. Might you have a part number for the shorter belt for the 2.4, preferably, Goodyear gatorback? Thanks, Dave
IMO, and I am not mad, but look at the what Tom said he is correct as far as the a/c delete pulley being what you should run,I am running a 350k5 belt from Autozone and am having issues(squealing)but try a 355k5 or the a/c delete pulley,I just ran the shorter belt cause it was cheaper

I would also like to do this as cheap as possible. Thank you for your help and the belt numbers. Dave
Why not disconnect the clutch electrical connector on the A/C compressor.
I ran my '93 2.2 like this, for months, until I could afford a new compressor etc.
Alont
That is what I did before taking the compressor out

Alont & BIGGS,
The A/C system was not working and without a charge. To my understanding, you need a charged system in order for the compressor to work. In any event, after I removed the serpentine belt and rotated the compressor pulley, I could hear a metal on metal sound. I have since removed the compressor and compressor clutch plate and still have the metal/metal sound, so I'm thinking maybe the bearing or clutch coil. Luckily I've a 2nd car. Once again, thank you for your opinions, suggestions & experiences. Dave
Hi Dave
[The A/C system was not working and without a charge.]
So was mine, I disconnected the electrical connector to prevent the clutch engaging and turning the compressor.
I was going to say that there is an adjustment to the clearance on the clutch but you have obviously sussed that out. The clutch makes quite a noise in a random way when it needs adjusting and there are usually metal shavings/swarf signs around the clutch.
Let us know when you fix it ,please
It does help others
Good Luck

Alont,
I have the pulley and clutch coil removed and after putting the pulley loosely on the shaft, it spins fine (bearings are good & no noise). I'll have to press the pulley/bearing on the shaft w/o the coil and reinstall the compressor to let you know the final results. Thanks for everyone's help. Dave
Pulley is back on the compressor without coil & clutch plate & spins fine with no noise; problem solved until it gets hot. Dave
