Wondering if anyone can help...
I have a 2003 Sunfire, automatic
Have been dealing with CEL for about 4 months...going back to the dealer multiple times for service.
Here's my service history for past 5months
1) Emmissions service, new fuel filter, routine service
2) CEL comes on, car almost stalls out when driving then comes back on, RPM's drop to zero then go back up again.
diagnotics shows P0172 code, Fuel pressure regulator replaced
3) CEL come on again, same quazi stalling happening while driving, diagnotic shows P0172 code again, PCM blamed and replaced.
4) CEL light on again, same stalling thing. Dianostic shows P0172 code AGAIN!!! New Map sensor installed
5) Car dies on 400 Series High way and scares the @!#$ out of me. Fuel Pump went. Fuel filter and Fuel pump Replaced.
I've just gone through 2 fuel filters in 5 months...wtf!
The tech told me that the fuel filter was extremely dirty, that it probably played a part in the fuel pump going and that i should replace it more often...i told him that the fuel filter was quit new, he stammered and said "might have been bad gas" (a f'n load of BS)
Questions:
a)Is there anyway that the CEL problems were not properly diagnosed in point 2 & 3.
b)What would cause my fuel filter to get so dirty (besides them possily not replacing it the first time or a bad tank of gas)
c)How would a dirty fuel filter cause a fuel pump to die
d) could these problems all be related? if so are they symptons of a bigger problem?
any help would be really appreciated.

too weird.. maybe something inside the tank that's causing constant fuel filter and eventually pump failure. haha you already replaced everything else. maybe try changing the fuel tank. also avoid those "save-a-buck" gas stations.
oh yeah and if you're using any kind of fuel treatment additive, lose that too. these things tend to cause nothing but problems. i know someone who lost a fuel pump to one of these things. brutal..
If a filter is plugged, the pump needs to work harder to force the same amount of fuel through. So yes a clogged filter can cause a pump to die.
I replace mine every 25k and call it good
Secondly any fuel sysem cleaner is pure alchol, and eats the seals on the pump, dont use it
PO172 is this for being to rich or to lean?
Anyways Replacing the PCM due to a CEL code is tossing parts at it, same as tossing sensors at it.
I would try a different shop.
If you have a code for it to lean, and the car was almost stalling out this would make sense, because it wouldnt have enough fuel, and the O2 sensors would see that and tell the PCM and set a code
I would like to see the defition of PO172 and my scan tool is at work so I cant do code lookup
