MPG way to low average.

Hey I have a 01 Cavalier 2200 auto, it's got 83,xxx on it and I am averaging right around 22-23 MPG. Any suggestions as to what it could be. I mean I get into it once in a while but I'm not constantly to the floor.

I wish I got mileage like that, but then I'm always making short trips in-town that hardly even get the car up to temp. This gets me about 10-12 mpg with my 97 Cav 2200 auto. You're going to get the best mileage if you spend almost every moment on the highway, which very few people do. There are also a bunch of little things that can make small differences like tire pressure, cargo, tune-ups, etc.

10-12 mpg on a Cavy? I got more than that out of my 94 GMC Safari with 186000 miles around town.

22-23 is about average for an auto overall. intake, header and exhaust actually gave me better gas mileage. I take it you've done a tune up recently as well, don't forget fuel filter, one of the most overlooked things in a tune-up!

Have you tried E3 plugs? They will make a difference. I use them so I know!

My z24 averages about 36MPG (canadian gallons...too lazy to convert to us...but is around 27 i think) most driving is done on the Highway, travelling 110-120km/h.

I need to tune it up. It's due for plugs wires, o2 sensor fuel filter. Air filter is actually pretty clean. tires I keep at 32psi.

Again, I can't stress enough the use of E3's in a N/A app as opposed to Splitfires, because the later has really slacked-off in product quality since I first used them in my '94. And may I reccommend using a set of MSD Superconductor wires. I got 24.5 avg mpg in my truck with such a combo after I just replaced the crank because of the pre-owner's mechanic failed to fish the old timing chain/ tensioner fragments out of the pan when he replaced them. At least he checked the head and used a Fel-pro gasket, though.
