Coolant leak from upper radiator hose

1998 2.4 ls, cavalier.
Here's the story, the car is driven regularly, reg maintenance, waterpump/tstat changed ~4 months ago. It sat all weekend, then we come home sunday after church (1st time in ages i've been there) and it's leaking. I fill with antifreeze and run it for 5 minutes till the leak developes. I trace it and wiggle the upper radiator hose. As I wiggle (lightly) I can see the coolant pour out from under this *housing*. I have traced a leak to the upper hose on the driver side of the block.
Questions:What housing is the hose connected to? Is there supposed to be a gasket there? and what would cause a leak there? Will it be hard to replace? Is this a sign of potentially worse problems (should we look @ trading in the pos?)

Is your water pump original? The water pumps are known to go on the 2.4L, and usually failing water pumps are designed to weep so you realize they are on their way out.

The upper rad hose goes from the rad back to the housing on the top of the head. There's a composite (aka plastic) piece that attaches to the head with two bolts. I think they're 10mm. The housing also has the coolant sensor in it. You can order a new housing from GM or go to an aftermarket piece.

It looks like the thermostat should be in there too, but it's not... it's actually at the back under the water pump.
