I'm going to be doing my front brakes this weekend and went to pep boys to get some rotors resurfaced that I had lying around. Problem is, when I gave them to the guy there, he measured their thickness and said that if they take off two millimeters like they usually do, then the rotors are going to be too thin. So they wouldn't resurface them for me.
However, I have this sneaking suspicion that he was just feeding me a line because I don't recall ever having those rotors resurfaced, so they should be thick as can be.
Does anyone know what the actual minimum rotor thickness is before you have to simply replace them?I think that guy was just being lazy and didn't want to resurface my rotors.
Thanks!

how much do they charge for resurfacing? unless they're slotted/drilled rotors you can get new rotors for about $20 a side.

Usually places charge anywhere from 5 to 8 bucks a rotor. Pretty cheap considering I've got an old pair lying around.
I ended up finding out the specs,
original is .786 inches
Minimum is .751
Discard is .736
Mine are .781 inches. Which is pretty right-on as far as what I expected. The only problem is that means that if I get the rotors resurfaced and they remove 2mm of steel like they normally do, it'll bring my thickness to .700 inches. Which basically means that I could NEVER get my rotors resurfaced because it'd instantly make them under specs.
There's something fishy going on. Either the guy at pep boys is lying to me about how much their lathe takes off, or chevy for some reason designed rotors that can never be resurfaced.
new rotors are 15 or 20 bucks a piece at O'reillys.
If they resurface the rotor as per the 1993 2.2 shop manual they should only take off 0.005" more than the deepest score and clear the rotor in one cut.(Using an AMMCO Brake Lathe)
There is only 0.035" between max at 0.786 and Min thickness after refinish at 0.751----2mm=0.078 so all the machining allowance+, will be gone in the first 2mm cut and the rotor will be undersized i.e.now at 0.703
So, unless you can find someone to take off only what is required + 0.005" it will be cheaper, and easier,to go with new rotors.
I have never had either of my '93 2.2's rotor resurfaced, they have always been replaced.
Hope this helps

They're feeding you a line. I used to cut rotors all the time that at first measure looked unsalvagable. It's the final measurement that matters as has been stated. However on the Cavvy, I do agree it's just better to get new rotors. The extra money spent will be worries off your mind.
if they are just stock oem rotors just buy new ones, their cheap to begin with
the minimum width is usually listed on the rotor edge
