2.2 2200 98 sunfire overheat?

Ive serched believe me and i found various threads about everything but what im asking lol. I bought a new glowshift water temp gauge cause the one on my dash board went out. I hooked everything up correctly but the gauge reads past 250.....im guessing thats bad because its in the red zone, but heres my problem..I've never had any issues with overheating. ive driven from missouri and back starting from grand rapids MI and stopped oh every 4 or 5 hours and it showed no signs of overheating. You think the gauge could be faulty or what? any info is appreciated
