I have another problem, my car is throwing a p0420 code now (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)). i just replaced the rear o2 sensor with a denso because i was getting a 0142 code (i think that was it) anyway it was the code saying it was too rich. and now after a week or so with the new o2 sensor on it is throwing this code. is it possible that it is the engine coolant temperture sensor. i read somewhere that that could be it, but if that was it wouldn't the temp gauge inside the car not work? it seems that the gauge works my car sits right on the center mark not sure what the degrees is there, but it has always sat there. if that aint it then it is probly the cat. the exhaust does not smell sulferry at all so i am not sure that the cat would be bad or not. any help at all would be greatly apreaciated.
the p0420 code could not be caused by the coolant temp sensor. it could be the cat, or the Denso o2 sensor you put in.

ok i did not think it was the temp sensor. but how bout this, the code came up after i bottomed out coming out of a parking lot (i was pissed when that happened) and i just noticed to day that the exhaust sounds loose. it kinda rattles a little bit when i start it and when i drive....the rattle is coming from the center area of the car, around where the cat is. i have determined that that is most likely it, am i correct in solving that issue....now i just have to find out where the exhaust is loose at.
please reply if i am wrong about that
get the car up on jackstands and check it out.

ok i shook the cat and it rattled...i also shook the exhaust pipes around there and the cat still rattled.....i think i f***ed it up when i bottomed out. now is that what is throwing the code? i was wanting a new exhaust anyways....i just did not want to "have to" get it.
thanx for ur help freq z
yeah... the "rattling" cat is a bad sign.
also, for future reference... any and all sensors should be replaced with GM replacements. I'd be wary about the Denso sensor you used.
I don't mind helping when I can. I hope you get it fixed.

what would be a better one then....bouch?? i heard they dont work well with our cars....but i also heard that they work good with our cars. so i am dumbfounded on this issue
i bottomed my car out last halloween and the cat plugged up, ended up cutting it off an straight piping it until about a month ago whn i had a full 1/4 inch exhaust with hi-flow cat and glasspacked. good luck with it, hope it turns out beter for you.

Like he said, the best replacement sensor in this case would be the one you get from the GM parts counter. They DID design the emission control system to work as a a system after all.
