my car is overheating and i cant find the problem. The temperature gauge is out of wake. it will go to 260 then back down to the middle of 195 and 260 then back up again. when i stop the car it will start to over heat but when im driving it will do the above. there is also alot of old oil looking sludge coming out of the air/oil return, can someone help me?

Is the car full of coolant? Coolant temp sensors do not like to be exposed to air, and will give readings like that if they are not completely full of coolant. This would also explain the overheating... water pumps are not good at puming air.
If the coolant is full, then you may just have a bad sensor. Overheating at idle is usually caused by the coolant fan not turning on at the right time, which again is influenced by the temperature sensor. Start with the sensor... get it to give accurate readings (by topping off coolant or replacing the sensor) then verify that the fan if turning on correctly.
I am unsure about the air/oil return... or even what that is...
22 miles per gallon and dropping fast...
Yeah check the coolant level, fan and its connector, termostat and all parts of the cooling system. Air/oil return ????
the black box on top of the manifold ( i have a 2.3 ).
the fluid is full i think its the sensor.

On the 2.4 on top of the intake manifold there is the throtle body and on top of it a black box with a hose under it that recirculates vapors from oil, not sure on the 2.3 ...
were is the temperature sensor
