Changing knock sensor on a 96 Z
Saturday, March 10, 2007 1:55 PM
I just found the damn thing, looks to be about a 22mm deep well would take it out. Problem is the heater core hoses are in the way as well as some of the exhaust, and the automatic trans is in the way from below. Any tips on how to snake that thing out of there. I'm getting the knock sensor circuit one code and the car runs like @!#$ because I'm sure the timing is being retarded. I have a new sensor ordered that will be here Wednesday of next week. I just need to figure out how to get this damn thing out so I can install the new one.

I ended up jacking up the car on the drivers side. Laying across the passenger fender and sliding my had down along the exhaust manifold I found and unplugged the sensor down below. Then I used a 22mm Deep well socket, a 3" extension, and a flex head ratchet and slowly worked the sensor out.

Coming in from the passenger side top between the manifold and the firewall seemed like the only way to get at it without pulling the trans out.

Good luck to whoever does this job on their car, it didn't take as long as I thought but you will get dirty and if your ratchet slips like mine did you will bleed. My car likes blood.
