So.. its snowing this morning.. half way to work, I have the window down so I can smoke and it gets a little cold so I turn on my air conditioner (heater). All of the sudden, i hear this rumbling noise and the car is vibrating. I turn the air off, it goes away. I come to a stop at a red light so now I can really hear it. I turn it back on.. RUMBLE....... VIBRATING.... I turn off the air. WTF is going on? Could some snow or some crap have gotten into something and made it wonky? What should I do?

Thanks.

Shot blower motor? They make a lot of noise sometimes when they are on their way out.
Hmm.. Ok. Would that be covered under my extended warranty that I bought?
It better be or I'm gonna be pissed =)

Well.. I called the dealer and I am going to bring it in tomorrow. Hopefully its not something thats gonna cost an arm and a leg and it better be covered under my warranty.

My mom bought a '05 cavi before winter, and when its really cold out it does that, but it goes away after having the blower on for about a minute.
If the "vibration" changes when you change your fan blower speed, then I think you've found the culprit in the blower fan. If not, I would suspect your air conditioning compressor. This would make sense if you were using the "defroster" setting, which runs the A/C even in winter.

Sounds like the compressor to me. Does it make a squealing noise?

It happens once in a while with mine when there's snow that get to the radiator fan. It's not the blower since it would do it even when not using the AC. The compressor should not make it vibrate unless it's badly damage.

Well.. its at the dealer now.
This morning, on the way there, I had the heater on until I got there (about 10 minutes) and it was fine. But I still want them to look at it to make sure it's not actually bad. Besides.. they wont charge to look at it.

WOO HOO! They replaced the actuator in the door (drivers side door locks were sticking) and they ordered a blower motor to replace on Tuesday. I pay nothing. Apparently when I got the extended warranty, I had the highest end warranty I could get so I had no deductible and they are doing everything free of charge. Awesome.

Cool... so blower motor was the noise then?
This same thing happened to my 04 Cavalier... I took it to the dealership because it was covered by the warranty. They said it was something blocking one of the vents. It stopped for a week or so after that and then it started up again. Then to add to that, when I would turn the air on, the RPM's would go from 1 to 2 just from turning on the air. The dealership looked at it again and said that they thought a sensor was causing it to do that. But I got it back and it still does that. So I am in the same @!#$ty situation. I still don't know what it is

Bob.. apparently it is the blower motor. I ran the heater this morning on the way to work but I didnt turn it up all the way.. just to the first ON setting cuz its snowing and cold again. No problems all the way to work. Gonna take the car in tomorrow and they should replace that piece.
