CEL light On?????
Saturday, February 17, 2007 2:42 PM
Ok, Ive got 01 cavalier 2.2L 4 spd auto, I just got Cel light up the other day. So I scanned it code popped up P0440 In which is Evaporative emmissions System fault. I erased the code never came back, 2 weeks later it popped back up.

I notice my gas cap O ring was cracked easy enough replaced it with a new one. Then deleted that Cel code, Now once in a while I will get the Cel on, Same P0440 cel will pop up. Anyone have a idea what could be causing this issue, I am not noticing any performance issues with the Cel on, Or off.

If any one could direct me to the trouble shoot steps that would be great.

Thanks.

I work at a goodyear, those are the "expensive codes". basically it requires us to use a smoke machine. basically, we put the machine into a vaccuum line, and it blows smoke. we test under certian coditions, and see which device is allowing the smoke to pass.

The bitch of it, is that you pretty much can't do it at home, UNLESS you parts swap. you can guess, and hope for the best, but unless you get it right the first time, you'll be wasting money.

a shop will charge you the diagnostic fee for pulling the code, and then the fee for using the smoke machine. At that point, if you're a DIY'er, then i would take it home and do it. Just remember, if for some reason, you put the part on, and it still doesnt fix it, you have to eat the cost..and still have no fix. BUT, if the dealer/garage did it, they would have to find the problem and correct it. maybe only charging you for parts.

I'd recommend a GM dealer, and go from there. obviously not the help you wanted, but its sometihng nonetheless.

rich grayo jr. wrote: 0440 relates directly to the evaporative emissions system. the parts that it monitors include (from stern to stem): the gas cap, the gas fill neck, the gas tank, the gas tank pressure sensor, the vacuum lines running from the tank to the evap canister, the canister itself, the valve on the canister, the lines from the canister to the purge valve, the purge valve itself, and finally, the line from the purge valve to the intake manifold. if any one of these partsis fauty, it could trigger the 0440.

Maybe a long shot, but have you tried looking at the evap canister line near the gas tank?
It has a rubber line that could be cracked, thus causing the code to pop on randomly.

Just a thought,
Hope it Helps....
