I'll never forget the salesman in 2002 telling me that the sparkplugs were good for
100,000 miles...
Then I asked, when the hood was open, where was the dipstick ?...
He didn't know...So, I pointed to the fill tube, he unscrewed, and here was a dipstick, hurray !...
Then, "Is the engine block ( it was a 2200 push rod version ) of cast iron or aluminum ?"...
He said, "Aluminum"...
There was rust around the freeze plugs, so I knew that was wrong...
(There were many ignorant responses to many questions)...
In my mind, "GM has been building this car for over 20 years, redesigned every part more
than 2 times, sometimes 9 times, so, surely, it can't be too buggy, and I went ahead
and bought one, it drove like some of the rental cars that I'd grown to like."

My comment - This maintenance forum has been and will continue to be valuable especially
because GMs' mainenance manual, and poorly trained dealerships, etc., need LOTS OF HELP !!
Addendum - One of the dumbest things GM put into the owners' manual is about the
4-speed automatic transmission's design, for normal maintenance, fluid changes at 100,000 miles...
Has anyone ever heard such bragging ?...
The old Hydromatic transmission now used by GM was introduced in 1938 ...
Even modern ATFs should be changed every 2 - 3 years ...
What does a new transmission sell for ? "For just a transmission job ?"...
"GM, sell all the transmissions you want, I'm not buying"...
The best car sales people have absolutely no mechanical ability, IMO
