Can blocks be interchanged?
Sunday, February 04, 2007 4:44 PM
Was wondering if a 2.3 could be used in a 2.4. Or a quad block be used in place of a 2.4. I have a friend that has a 99 z. and he had a rod go through the block...Was trying to find himself a motor or a block to use for the car. cause it only had 70 to 80 K on the car. Or if he would be better off gettin' rid of the car. Thanks in advance.

A quad is a 2.3. it will bolt on the same but some sensors are different. You would need to use the 2.4 sensors.

so as long as I used the sensors off the 2.4 it would all be good?

I wouldn't even mess around with a 2.3 since they are obd I and won't have the correct sensors to work with the 2.4. Your friend also most likely has the newer version of the 2.4 since he has a 99 and doens't have a pvc (SP) valve, I would just tell him to get a 99-02 2.4 from a junkyard and swap it out, since he might have done more damage to the engine than just the block and it would cost more to replace all those parts.

Ouch........i'd just keep searching tho. I really don't think the 2.3 would work since he's got the newer 2.4, I know you should be able to get one for no more than 500 since the engine hasn't been put in a car for over 5 years. Search a little bit farther b/c the drive could still be cheaper than paying 1000 for a high mileage 2.4 that might need the water pump replaced. Another 1000+ and you could get a brand new one with warranty from gm, you've got some bad junk yards where you live.....Good luck with the searching.

I just bought a 2.4 from a salvage yard in MN with 13,000 miles (legitimate carfax verified) shipped to my door in St Louis, with a 6 month unlimited mileage warranty for $1000. I used car-part.com and junkyarddog.com and got about 100 responses from salvage yards. Give it a try, plus you can pit the salvage yards in a price war, thats what I did. They wanted 1350 for this engine, I got em down to $1000...Good luck. Ive got a 2.4 with a slight knock (its definitely a knck though) I would sell cheap...Probably gonna need bearings and the crank turned Im guessin...
