P0442 code
Thursday, February 01, 2007 3:07 PM
I am now driving my second Sunfire, a 96 with a 2.2 engine and 5 speed. On both cars, I frequently get the MIL to come on and the code returned is always P0442 (small evap system leak). I know this is usually the gas cap needing to be resecured most of the time, but I want to know if this is a very common problem with these cars (since this is the second one I have owned that does this) or if it's something that is common for all cars with OBD2 systems.

Thanks!

Doesn't look like the gas cap...

GM wrote:The evaporative system includes the following components:

The fuel tank
The EVAP vent solenoid
The fuel tank pressure sensor
The fuel pipes and hoses
The fuel vapor lines
The fuel cap
The EVAP canister
The purge lines
The EVAP canister purge solenoid valve
The EVAP service port

Check for the following conditions:

Any missing or damaged O-rings at the fuel vapor and the EVAP purge line canister fittings.
A cracked or a punctured EVAP canister.
A damaged source vacuum line, EVAP purge line, EVAP vent hose, or fuel tank vapor line.
A poor connection at the PCM. Inspect the harness connectors for the following conditions:
-Backed out terminals
-Improper mating
-Broken locks
-Improperly formed connectors
-Damaged terminals
-A poor terminal to wire connection
