About three weeks ago my 2000 pontiac sunfire stalled out in an intersection. I knew it wasn't due to having no fuel, because I had a quarter of a tank. I noticed I didn't hear my fuel pump while turning on the ignition. I then had my car towed back to my house, I tried to turn it on one more time and I then noticed the fuel pump turning on, but I still had no luck with the car starting. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on what to do? I was also wondering how to release the pressure on the fuel rail.

Sorry for the double post, the engine is a 2200 LN2, with the 3 speed transmission. When I tried to turn my car back on, it would start then turn off.

Are you SURE you have a quarter tank of fuel?

Only asking because there has been trouble with Fuel Tank contents senders going bad and causing the fuel gauge to indicate a quarter tank or so when it is really empty.

Do you have any theft system lights ON ?

I originally thought I had ran out of gas, so I put 2 gallons in from a gas tank of mine. No i don't believe I do.

What alont said... I had a 2000 recalled for the faulty fuel level sender.... it got to a quarter tank and was bone dry....

My second 2000 Cavalier killed the fuel pump by running dry.... again, the sender unit was fubared.....

to releave the pressure on the fuel system, pull the fuel pump relay (under hood fuse box) then start the car. let it run until it stalls out (2-3 seconds)

now the pressure is relieved.

you need to prime the fuel system after the new pump is installed. to do this. put the fuel pump relay back in. then turn the key to the "ON" position, but do not start the car,repeat 3 times then start the car.
