i need help trying to figure out whether my problem is my transmission or my clutch.... i dont have a garage to check this myself, otherwise i would have already... my friend is going to help me but its not something we have time to put in a garage and leave there while we figure it out and get the right stuff... its a one day fix what needs to be fixed and done thing... the car, btw, is a 1988 cavalier z24 2.8L 5-Speed... my friend believes i need a new transmission, i think my clutch may just be so shot to hell and back that it is my problem... basically, my cv axles went, and i replaced them... i gained a pretty cute buck in my car when i was just driving normally, seemed like the clutch was giving up pressure and gaining it back again almost right away... it got slowly worst, and finally the whole thing just stopped moving... when i try and put it in gear and go somewhere, you just hear spinning and clanking from the drivetrain... he thinks i need a new transmission, i think the clutch is just disintegrated and theres absolutely no connection... any help / advice on this problem would be great so im not spending unnecessary money and doing unnecessary transmission swaps if i dont need to.... ask questions if necessary to help diagnose this, im just looking for some help :/... oh and another reason i suspect clutch is that if i put it in gear, and very slowly release the clutch, as to not put much pressure on it, i can creep forward and get going at an idle speed... if i let it out even a bit too hard or give it any gas, it breaks right back open, like the clutch cant take hardly any pressure or force... im not sure, i suspect clutch is shot, but he still thinks transmission... please help!!! thanks
Are both your axles correctly inserted in the transmission?, I ask because this happened after you changed your axles.
I have actually fixed a car a long time ago by jacking up the offending side and kicking the hub until the internal circlip locked correctly!
Just a thought

It sounds to me like your clutch is worn out.
it seems like the clutch engages, and either it never fully disengages or the trans is shot.... yes both axles are properly in there
Could be the diff in the tranny going out. I do not think it is your clutch.

lol. believe me, it's your tranny. samething happened to me bro. it sucks. i was going down the road driving normally, all of a sudden, heard a rather disturbing noise, couldn't shift, pulled over, and i was done. i managed to get my reverse to work, thats it. anyways. i knew it wasn't my clutch cause it was a pretty much brand new exedy clutch, along with a new clutch master cylinder, all only put in about a 1000 miles ago. it was really gay for me cause i just got done taking the tranny down for the clutch, but anyway, i did it again, up with a new tranny and it works great. in your situation though, i recommend putting a new clutch on while your at it. btw, my tranny burnt out, cause my tranny oil dipstick fell out, never noticed since it's out of sight down in there, and it leaked out the oil until it was pretty much done for. might want to check that out.
