2.4 With Oil/Antifreeze Mixed, How Long Does IT LAST?

I have a 1997 Grand am and the water pump went on it allowing oil and dex cool to mix, luckily the previous owner caught it and gave me the car. I pulled the engine apart and the head gasket was not blown, there was no antifreeze entering the cylenders and no rod knock of any kind.

The car only has 72K on it so not much engine wear, inside the motor is really good but I was not sure what to expect when I put it back together. To those whom have run into this how long have your engines lasted after replacing the water pump/HG after finding the chocolate milk oil?

thanks
Chris

If you fix the problem it should last as long as any 2.4.

Ok i must ask how would a bad water pump allow water and oil to mix?But to answer your question they normally last as long as any other car as long as you catch it soon enough.

When your pump looks like this...

On the 2.4s the pump is run off the timing chain, the seal busted letting oil in, bada bing you have chocolate milk.

Chris, because the camshaft lobes are heavily loaded by working against tension

from valve springs, lubrication failure of most kinds will cause the lobes to be

scored or discolored....

Check the camshaft, and here's hoping it's O.K. !

Be sure to change the oil, let the engine run for 15-20 minutes to clean it good and change the oil again.

Yea the lobes looked fine, I dont think this thing was run for more than 10 mins after the pump went. everything internally looks good, to be safe I am having the head decked and valves pressure tested.

Also I know definantly let her run and change to oil, would anyone suggest a heavier weight upon start up, maybe 10W30 then switch to 5W 30?

Thanks
Chris

I would run the 5w-30,maybe some engine flush, but probably just fresh and run get to temp and then drain would be good.

Agree with most. Would do the flush, for $5 it's probably worth it. Engine should be fine, even if it was a bit longer than 10 minutes.
