Key won't turn

The car is a 97 Cavalier 2.2. It's been doing good until this morning. My fiancee put in her key and couldn't turn it. It took her a good 5 minutes ot fiddling with it to get it to turn. The car is in park, turning the wheel doesn't help and it WILL start, it's just a fraction of an area where the key will allow you to turn it. Is there something that can cause this and if so, is it an easy fix? I can't imagine it being anything major, i just don't know what it could be. We can remove the

We also tried both of our keys, and it's not just hers. It's mine as well and just started this morning. Any suggestion is appreciated.

go to a dealer and ask for a new ignition tumbler set up and just change the internals and if that dont work go to a scrap yard and get the whole thing just make sure a key is with it.

My daughters 97 does/did the same. It is the ignition tumbler. A shot of PB blaster, WD40, Liquid wrench, or the likes. Wiggle and work it in. Knock on the tumbler a few times to work in the penetrant and loosen the tumblers. Work the key in and out several times. Works good but only lasts a few months. Once they get to the state the tumbler pins stick - it needs replacing before it really gets stuck and leave you stranded.

The tumbler pins push up over the tip of the key, but are too sticky to drop back down over the narrower parts of the key. Sometimes they just get frozen if you have used the key on the door when the lock is covered in snow or ice and the key gets wet. The you transfer some of the water top the ignition tumbler. Then if the car sits in sub zero temperatures for a while it can freeze in the ignition. The penetrant oil spray will also remove any water. The same problem happened to our other 96 Sunfire on the drivers door, and trunk lock.

Do you have an aftermarket shifter? Try adjusting the height, if it's pushing on the shaft you wont be able to turn the key, not easily at least.
