I have a 1998 2.4L Z24 Auto that is currently having shifting issues. I have changed fluid and so on, so I now want to try a different PCM to eliminate the possibility of having a PCM issue. Anyways, when I go to the junkyard, I want to get a PCM that will be suited for my geographic area. By that I mean that I want to get the best performing PCM and not a code that is designed for a california or low emissions area (I live in Indiana and do not have to pass any emissions). My last car (1998 Ford Escort ZX2) had a few "good" codes for both the auto and manual, so I was wondering if the 2.4L Cavi's have any codes that perform the best. Thanks!

Thanks Shifted. I have one more question and that is where is my PCM located in my 98? I read something about there being two locations, one by the cruise and the other on the passenger side behind the bumper. I checked by the cruise and it is not there. So should I conclude that the PCM is behind the bumper?

Thanks man. I think I will just pull the PCM out, take it to the dealer and get the most current software flash. Hopefully that will resolve my hard shift issues.

I am experiencing hard shifts, especially when the car is cold. The best way to describe the hard shift is as though the car is allowing the engine to rev higher than normal before shifting. There is absolutely no slippage when shifting, but the car will rev up higher than the normal shift points and will abruptly shift. Once the transmission is warm, the hard shifts are not bad at all, but the engine does seem to rev too high. I also do not get more than 300 gallons out of a tank of gas. Any thoughts?

I have absolutely no codes thrown or anything to indicate there is a problem via the CEL's.

all pcms are not the same. you can not put a 2.2 liter pcm into a 2.4l car. the data is different. Also some pcms have to be programed by a dealer when they are installed. the best way to check and see if the car has california emissions on it is to just check the emissions sticker on the car.

you do realize that ron (shifted) probably knows more about the pcms for our cars than anyone on the site? im sorry but i'd rather take his word over someone who just joined today...
but i will agree that if you were to purchase a brand new pcm, you would need it flashed for your car.
as for the emissions, they are all the same.

Yeah, I assumed he realized that I was talking about his year and model... Of course the 2.2's are different than the 2.4's, etc. The PCM hardware is exactly the same, just the programming is different. And all 2000-2002 2.4 ECU's are the same programming and hardware, 2000-2001 2200 ECU's are the same programming and hardware, 2002-2005 Eco's and 2200's are the same hardware but different programming, 99 2.4 is all in its own year for programming, 97-98 2.4's are all the same programming and hardware, 97-99 2.2 are all the same programming and hardware, 96 and 95 are odd years for both the 2.2 and 2.4 when it comes to ECU's...
