need help......engine quit

alright, i have a 01 2200 5 spd. with just shy of 114k mi on it. and this morning it dies......here is what i know

my dad takes my car this morning because his is in the shop. he calls me letting me know that my car just died. not the greatest news in the world to wake up to..eh? so i get some tools and drive over to meet him. we get there and he tries to turn the engine over and the engine starts and dies. anyways i get there thinking mi iac valve might be acting up because i recently did the 2.3 tb swap. i run to autozone pick up a new one (80 bux!!!) and get to my car and i install it. my dad cranks it over while i watch, and the engine starts to go and just dies. so he tries it again and then i hear a pop and see a short jet of flame shoot out of my tb. followed shortly by a puff of smoke. i had the car towed back home, and here i sit completely flabbergasted as to what/why my car died.

you guys have any advice/suggestions? i would like to keep this problem out of a shop if i can, i just dont have the money for them to give me the runaround.

This is strange! My car is doing the exact things right now. It doesn't happen everytime I start it up but at times when i do the engine cuts off after a second or 2. I find if I keep putting my gas when I first turn it on it will stay on. But as of right now I'm still trying to figure out whats going on with it

Could be a fuel problem, Time for trouble shooting, Do you have a check engine light on?. First of all I would get a psi test done on youre fuel pump. Then if you got a digital meter, I would see what kind of reading to you got with youre coil packs.

first off RicanZ24, does your car run and drive? and just die on you sometimes while driving?? because mine definately wont even start. i kinda get a false start type thing and then it dies. not only that but when i start the car and i try to use the trottle to keep the car running and /or to rev it, i get nothing.

and

Rich weeks, i am not sure of what you mean by a pressure test done on the fuel pump. do i have to drop the tank in order to do the test? it could be my coil packs tho, where is the coil pack located? or better yet does anyone have any pictures?

my only question about the coil packs is that i am getting spark, when the engine first turns, it does get combusiton in at least one cylinder.

My car dies in park. It seems to happen all the time if I'm at the store for 20 minutes hope back in my car try to turn it on then it dies after a second of being on. What you describe is the same exact thing I'm going through. The only difference is that if I start it up i have to keep giving it gas then it will stay on. Other wise its just died on the spot. This may sound weird but when I try to start it and it dies I can hear what sounds like fluid rocking back and forth. Almost like you have a gallon of water half filled and you're slowly moving it to right and left making that making that sound.

What RIch is talking about is what I just done. I went to Midas and they did a pressure check on my fuel to make sure it wasn't a fuel problem. But I passed that part and I now left wondering what else could it be.

see the only problem with me getting these tests done is that my car isnt running, i cant drive it anywhere, so i would have to pay for a tow truck. and although i havent listened for it, i didnt hear any type of sloshing sound or anything.

You don't have anything with your insurance? I have progressive and it's worth paying a few extra dollars a month to tow your car anywhere

i am a part of a car club, i wanna say gmac. and they do tow for free, but they only tow once per breakdown. anyways i found there is a garage that is open on saturdays, just down the road from me so i will probably wind up pushing it down there, and having them do a full diagnosis on what could be wrong. i just dont feel like paying to tow my car back and forth. i figure ill just pay them to figure out whats wrong, and then ill fix it myself once i know what the problem is.

well i went ahead and checked my oil level and apparently i was low, the dipstick was at the 'add a quart' level so i put a quart of oil in and whe i started the engine it turned a lot easier, but it still died. so im gonna do a full oil change, and see what happens.

i was also curious to see if i had any gas. i hadnt thought to check for gas and i had none. i put gas in and it stopped sputtering when i tried to start it, but it still wont stay running. so im gonna run to autozon to get some oil and a filter. ill prolly get some more gas while im out. can you guys think of anything else i might need to test???

and some pics of the coil pack location would be more that helpful.

So is the following true:-

1. The car WAS out of gas

2. When you added gas the car started (and stopped sputtering)

3. When you hit the throttle it dies.

4. You now have a CEL and the Battery light.

4. Was probably because it wasn't running properly or long enough to keep the battery charged after attempted starts.

1,2 and 3----As rich weeks suggests---1,2 and 3 "Could be a fuel problem", maybe the Fuel Filter or, is the pump running now after being out of gas?

alrighty then, i just got the car back from the shop and turns out that i had a multitude of problems,

my coolant temp sensor was bad so i was dumping too much fuel into the engine, also apparently my sparkplugs were cracked and when they pulled them the plugs left some of thier threads still in the head, so they had to die/tap out the threads, also my igniton control module was bad. so they replaced it. does all of that make sense?

Your spark plugs were cracked?..Sounds fishy to me...They probably fubered them and tried to stick you with the bill of fixing it. With the right tools there should be no reason to break a sparkplug off like that.

When the old ones were installed did they use any anti seize?, if not they may have welded themselves into your head.
