1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 Overheating

Replaced the 195 deg. thermostat with 180 deg. I checked them both in hot water on the kitchen stove and they are O.K. Replaced water pump. Still overheats, clear in the red zone near 260 deg. Thermostat is not opening or staying open. Hose below thermostat chamber is cool. Radiator fins are cool. Removed thermostat entirely. Only heats to about 110 deg. Radiator fins are warm, not hot. Air temperature in Indiana was about 50 deg outside today. A mechanic friend said it might be a bad head gasket. I tried to check the compression, but didn't get an accurate reading because I couldn't hold my compression gage tight enough because of the deep reach. But, each cylinder was 125 psi before it started blowing by the rubber seal on the gage. Any ideas???? Anyone fix such a problem by replacing the head gasket??? Thanks, Joe

I should hae added that the cooling fan engaged when it was overheating. I bled the cooling system, with the little screw, when I replaced the coolant and the recovery tank stayed full like it should. Joe

Well shouldn't the compression be reading 170-215? 170 being the lowest to think about a rebuild......

You are right about the higher compression. I don't know high it acrually was. I stated that I couldn't hold it tight and didn't get an accurate reading. It was at least 125 psi on all four cylinders. Also, it overheated immediately with both thermostats, just by driving about 2 miles. Joe

Radiator blockage, pinched hose, still have air in the system (took me almost an hour to bleed mine out), bad water pump, bad head gasket (exhaust getting into the water jackets)

That's all I can think of.. .
