Rattle/Pop corn sound under floor board
Wednesday, December 20, 2006 10:29 AM
When im at a low rpm i get a noise that varies between a light scraping to a what almost sounds like pop corn from under the floorboards. The cavie was recently in the tranny shop where they did a full diagnostic and check on it for a different problem. They didnt note any issues, even on the road test O.o. Anyway, the guy i bought the car from told me that the engine mounts are bad, at least one is cracked bit and that the tranny mount may need to be replaced as well. What could be wrong? Its annoying and embarrassing. Any ideas?

sounds to me it could be the rear trannt mount, All I would do is you or a buddy get youre car up on car jacks, Get long pry bar or screw driver, Try prying around the each tranny mount area to see if there is any play in the mounts, That should tell you for sure if a tranny mount is shot.

Good Luck

Keep ud updated.

Sounds like the rubber bushing in your actual mount might be bad so therefore there is no insulation from the movement of the tranny, just metal to metal which would make a popcorn like sound at idle because your motor and tranny do alot of moving at idle.

Another way to diagnose the tranny mount could be to run it at WOT and if the sound goes away at full throttle it is most likely your tranny mount because at WOT that tranny should move and stay back against the mount.

Thanks, thats probably the best answer ive gotten yet, and makes the most sense. And in fact, thats exactly what happens. when im in a low rpm it rattles but the second i give it ANY gas or put and +Gs on the car, it goes away. It'll be a couple weeks before i'll have the cash to replace all of the mounts, which was on the to-do list. i'll repost once i can confirm that solved the problem.

Yep! I replaced the engine mounts and tranny mounts and the rattling went away. However, now it would seem that my engine is idling quite high =\

Could have a vaccum leak in one of rubber lines or hose popped off. Is their check engine light on?.
