heat/ac blower won't shut off
Saturday, December 16, 2006 2:56 PM
It's a 95 Sunfire 2.1. I drove it around as usual and when I turned off the ignition the blower would not shut off. After starting it and killing the engine several times did nothing I took out the fuse so it would finally stop. I put the fuse back in an hour later and it still did the same thing. I noticed when I put it back in with the engine off that there were electrical sparks meaning its a live circuit. I took it back out as to not kill the battery. There are no garages open until monday. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

If it's wired the same as my '93 2.2 , try switching the Mode selector to OFF--see if the blower motor is now stopped with ignition ON.
(The Mode selector is the OFF/VENT/BI-LEV/HTR/BLEND/DEFROST switch) When the Mode selector is in any position except OFF +12 volts is applied to the Blower Resistor Assembly and the Blower Motor switch. (So in OFF you SHOULD remove the +12 volts from the motor.)

This causes the blower motor to run at slow speed as there are three resistor in series with the motor, the next blower position bypasses one resistor and the motor speeds up, the next two resistors, even faster and the third position bypasses all the resistors and the motor runs at full speed.

If it does not stop with the Mode selector OFF you may have a bad blower switch/shorted resistor assy/ or a wiring fault

Let us know what you find

Yes I turned the mode selector to OFF several times with no results. I can still control the speed of the fan but even the OFF switch is useless. Even if it is OFF the fan runs the windshield defrost ONLY at whatever speed I select. I can turn it down to the lowest setting but I'm still thinking it will kill the battery. This is very strange and I don't know what to think of it. Any suggestions??

The good book says "If the Blower Motor operates with the Mode Selector OFF, replace the Mode Selector.
If you can access the Heater/A/C and Rear Defogger Control Assy connector C2 it's pin E in and D out.
i.e. if you have continuity across these two pins with the Mode Switch at OFF the Mode Switch is defective-just note this is a '93

Hope it helps

The weirdest thing. I took out the fuse and didn't use the car all Sunday and when I started it up and put it back in today, it worked normally.... We'll see how long it lasts for I guess.

Clever, may I suggest a future in Advanced Electronics---- or The Magic Circle

Glad you fixed it, anyways
