cavy cooling problem
Monday, December 04, 2006 12:47 PM
ok my 99 cavy has been givin me hell for the past 2 months, it started overheating one day and i thought it would have been the thermostat but i guessed wrong it still did it. i then replaced the water pump and ran some radiator & system flush through it and i thought that would work but yet again it didnt. so i got tired of it and took out my thermostat after days and days of trying to bleed it (thinking it was air locked). today my thermostat is still out and i cant get anyone to figure it out. so please if anybody can will you please help i have a baby and i cant transport him in the car when its this cold out!! also could it be my heater core? any suggestions are greatly appreciated!! thanks

What size motor in the car and is it a 1999 or a 1998?

Does it make a gurgling sound when you first start the car (or soon after)? Could be a head gasket. What motor/year?

The 2.2 Litre motor is known for head gasket problems and that is what I am leaning towards as a cause for your car's overheating problem.

what do you mean run like crap?

Maybe it doesn't have a blown head gasket but the cylinder head surface is warped.
this is normal for 2.2s and 2.4s

it could also just be your radiator cap

I know this probably sounds dumb, but don't tighten your radiator cap all the way. Just tighten it just enough to where its not going to fall off. Also, what about a coolant flush, would that fix the problem?

The problem is by not tighten the cap you have lower the PSI in the cooling system required to raise the coolant's boiling point. You run a risk of sending cooant coloser to boil into the engine. What this problem sounds like is one or more of the following:

1) Blown Head Gasket - The Good Old GM Legacy.

2) Clogged radiator

3) Warped Head

4) Obstruction Reducing The Cooling System's Air Flow - Lest Likely

How long does it take to overheat? Does the Rad Fan Turn On? Are you blowing out Coolant from your exhaust pipe? Is one part of your Rad cool and anther part hot (USE TEMP GUN DO NOT FEEL)?

The radiator should be fine if he was able to drive the car with out the thermostat.
