i need help guys

i've read the sticky and there were noposts exactly like my problem so here goes, the chevy dealership couldn't figure it out.

2001 cav. z24
the car never runs hotter than about 125 to 135 degrees, even after driving for anhour. the radiator fan is supposed to kick on when...
1. the thermastat reaches a certain temp.
2. using the a/c or the defroster.
in the mornings the car will not warm up, its not the fluids, heater core, etc...i've checke all that but what i've noticed is that when i start the car and turn the heater on, not the defroster, it automattically kicks the fan on so it's not letteing the car warm up because the fan i cooling it down. but if i turn the heater off for about 20 mins the temp guage goes up to 1bout 140 but never gets hot enough for the thermostat to open its a 180 thermostat. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks guys

Have you checked the thermostat to make sure it isn't stuck open??

yep, it'll get hot but it takes about 20 mins of running w/o the heater on until the temp get up hot enough then i have to turn the heater on. and it'll blow hot until the fan kicks on and drops the temp back down.

The radiator fan will only start for AC and high temp.

Did you replace the thermostat? If you did, did you put a Gm one back in or a cheap one? If it's a cheap one, get one from Gm. Some of the cheap one are too weak and it's just like being open all the time.

I had the same problem happen on a 98 2200.

A good way to test a thermostat is to run the car at idle with the radiator cap off(Assuming 2001's have them). (Not the expansion tank cap)

When the thermostat opens you will see a flow of coolant, up till then the coolant will not move.

[1. the thermastat reaches a certain temp.] Not to be picky but it is the coolant temperature sensor reaches a certain temp and signals the ECM/PCM to turn on the fan. The thermostat should be fully open by this temperature.

To add to Gilles statement

On my '93 grounding the diagnostic terminal will turn on the fan

Disconnecting the A/C pressure sensor will set a DTC 66 which must be cleared when reconnected, otherwise the fan will run all the time.

If DTC 14 or 15 sets or the ECM is in back up--the fan will run all the time

Just in case it helps you solve the problem
