Parking on hills

I park my 2000 sunfire on a hill. If I leave it there for like 3 or 4 days I always have a hard time getting it started. I have to let it down the hill to get it started on some flat ground. The tank has only been really low once, all the other times it has had 1/2 to 1/4 of a tank of gas in it. Anybody have any thoughts on what may be going on?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, the pickup in the tank is toward the rear (safer to coast forward, if need be, to flat ground). Over time, fuel will flow downhill, which will flood the engine if you park facing downhill. Hold the gas pedal all the way down for the first 3 seconds of cranking, then take your foot off. Otherwise, your 'ride has a starting problem.

DartBaron,

I park facing uphill. Also what does holding the gas pedal do? I read somewhere that it clears the injectors of any gas that has flooded in there. Is that right? Thanks.

Yeah, your fuel is probably draining back into the tank and might be needing to 'burp' the system on start up. Holding the gas all the way down tells the PCM you are having a flooded engine problem and it shuts off the injectors to help clear the fuel. I tried it once, and my engine just cranked on and on. The moment I let up, it caught instantly. Maybe if you cycled the engine to 'ON' a few times, where the fuel pump does it's short priming run, It'll start normal? Easy fix worth a try!

The fuel pickup is to the front of the tank. Holding the pedal down could flood the engine.
How steep is this hill?

id like to see someone flood their engine with fuel by parking on a steep hill... that would make my day. Isnt this why we have a fuel pump ? to pump the fuel into the motor ? it doesnt just seep in there...

Not talking about flooding by sitting on a hill. Talking about flooding by holding the pedal while trying to start the car.

On my '93

IF the throttle is opened all the way
AND the RPM is less than 600 RPM
the ECM temporarily stops fuel delivery.

If the TPS/throttle is moved to 70% or less the ECM returns to starting mode.

In case this helps

Sounds like what you have is a fuel pressure regulator issue. I ran into a couple of them at my old shop. The regulaor is stuck a little open and is bleeding the rail low. The way you confirm this issue is to look a fuel prssure guage and whtch the prssure change after shutdown. A Advanced Auto teardown book should give you the speaks on the on / off fuel pressures.

actually full throttle forces the engine to clear any flooded fuel....its in the manual

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
