trouble lights
Sunday, November 26, 2006 2:15 PM
ok, it has been about 3 weeks now and i am still unable to figure out what is causing the ABS, TRAC OFF and SERVICE lights to come on on the dash. i recently put new rotors on it and was told that maybe a piece of metal could have come off and stuck to the wheel speed sensor. so i pulled both front sensors off, cleaned and reinstalled them and the lights are still on. i checked the plug end at the sensors, on the computer under the hood, put my code reader on it and even disconnected the battery for a couple hours. can someone please tell me what could possibly be causing my problems? any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Still under warranty? Take it in! If not, you probably have an ABS sensor issue somewhere. New maintenance schedules from everyone include a brake fluid flush and fill every two years. Cost of about $70, but could be less if a special machine is involved that automates the whole procedure. Well worth it to avoid $$$$$ repairs to ABS system due to contaminated/'worn out' fluid. Good luck!

Before you begin any diagnosis, you need whatever code is stored in the memory. It can be hundreds of things. Any fault with the ABS system will turn disabel the ABS and traction control, and vise versa. They each use the same systems but are two different systems.

He already put a code reader on it, and we all know how verbose those codes are! Good call on the association, though. Since they both use wheel speed sensors to work, and 'all' those lights lit up, those sensors are the best bet to start diagnosis.

Your trac control light will only come on if you have a problem with the front sensors. When you get this light along with your ABS light you can narrow it down to a bad sensor , connector or broken wire. All can be checked with an ohm meter.

ok well does anyone know what the proper readings would be at the wires and scross the sensors?

I have a thought for you, my '02 Grand Am GT had this problem once. I looked into it on a GAGT site and found out that if where the sensor is has lots of rust or debris in or around it, it can set that off. That's and idea for you that doesn't cost a thing.
