1995 Cavalier... Are the door pins replaceable
Tuesday, November 14, 2006 2:12 PM
I am confused as ever. I took our car to Maaco and wanted to have the problem on the driver's side door closing bad (wore pins/hinge) and they said they could do pins. It was 1.5 hours labor and $12.00 for the parts. That is still close to $150 job so I took it yesterday to a friend of a friend that has a body shop and did my 1997 S-10's pins on the driver's side when they went bad for $50 and that included parts. He told me these were riveted and I would need new hinges. It was $120 for the hinges, $100 in paint and another $50 to install them for $270. He said if it were his car just loosen the hinges up at the bolts and shift the door some so it shuts good and that will buy a couple of year for $50 in labor. Did Maaco have access to something that you change the riveted pieces out with or did this guy hit it on the head? Should I just have him adjust the door so it is good for a bit and let Maaco spray it?

Well you got 2 choices to choose from,

1). You could got to the GM dealer and pick them up.

2). Go to thw junk yard get some for 3 quarters the price less then the GM dealer.

To replace the door hinges are pretty straight forward, Undo the 4 bolts off each hinge if u got a buddy to give you a hand makes it alot easier job,

I guess what I was trying to figure out is if I could just do pins/bushings rather than put new hinges in. Are they replaceable?

The pins are not replaceable, you have to do the hinges

Any idea where the cheapest place to buy them would be?

Also... Anyone have the GM numbers for them? I keep looking around for a parts breakout list for this car for GM numbers but can't find anything!

$115 for the hinges through GM. Does JC Whitney or one of those places sell them for a lot less?

Junk yard would be youre best bet. Unless you dont mind spending the money from the Gm Dealer.
