Blown motor

hey everyone!
I just picked up a 1995 Sunfire SE 2 weeks ago, today I think I blew the motor. I'm checking the bone yard for a replacement, what engine's will drop in?
are all the 2.2's from 1995-1997 direct drop in?
also any guides on doin this? I put the tranny in myself (5-speed) so I can turn a wrench (just not really good...lol)

thank's Shaun

Maybe you should make sure you actually blew the engine first.

good point, it makes a knocking sound and at certain RPM 3000+ you really hear it, also there is a major loss of power.
all the plugs looked fine however so I'm thinking bottom end?

I recently pulled the 2.2 motor on my daughters 97. I was planning on putting in a bone yard replacement, but ended up fixing the one I had. In my research it was mentioned to me that the engine to tranny guide pin size changed from the 96 to 97 year and to watch out for this. I can not confirm this as I did not end up having to worry about it. But further reasearch for you might be warrented.

Weird, but not necessarily a blown engine. Could be fuel/spark related. Don't get me wrong, it could very well be pooched, but there are other things that can cause those symptoms like lack of fuel pressure or too much spark advance. Does your oil pressure light come on?

Is there oil in the engine?

I pulled the engine for 2 reasons. First the timing chain tensioner was shredded, and also there is developing some bottom end noise associated with diminishing oil pressure. I was unable to locate quickly any used 2.2's that seemed in reasonable condition that were local to me at the time and so just replaced the tensioner and dropped the engine back in. We'll just run it now until it gets worse. So far it's holding very well. We just run it easy and the car doesn't get used for any long trips. Just local driving.

Sorry mike, I meant to quote GP-SE on his description of the symptoms - loss of power and knocking over 3000

the oil light was on one time outta the 4 times I started it, oil level is normal as is coolant.
would lack of fuel cause the loud knocking?
there was a sound coming from the tensioner ever since I got the car (2 weeks ago), I suspected the tensioner was goin to go, however it still makes the noise now.
perhaps my timiing belt is stretched and moved a notch throwing my timing off?

There's no timming belt. Take the oil pan out with the engine in the car and see if there's any metal particles.

Lack of fuel/advanced timing/bad plug wires can all cause bad knocking. I had the same problem in my 1992 wagon and the culprit was the plug wires arcing. A quick thing to do is open the hood when it's dark out, turn the headlights off, and have the engine running. If you see dim flashes around the plug wires, that's your problem. The loud banging I was hearing was backfiring through the intake because the spark would arc from one wire to another, and the wrong cylinder would get the spark. Lack of fuel will cause more of a pinging sound, and/or backfiring through the exhaust which may sound like knocking - same with the timing. I dunno how to explain your oil light though - it's entirely possible your oil pump has shat, and the knocking is a bearing that's given up. Makes sense to try all the cheap solutions first though!
