What are signs of a blown head gasket. I have a 2.4L and I heard once you blow the head gasket, it is a pain to repair?

Minor blow -> overheating while sitting still, or running high temp all the time. Gurgling sounds when you rev the engine right after starting the car in the morning.
Major blow -> white vapor out the tail pipe.

Either way the exhaust will smell slighly sweet, like antifreeze does.

Depends how you blow it.... I blew out the piece between cyls 2 & 3... and it ran like crap... but it still ran. Compression test it - that's a sure fire way to know if it's gone or not.

It's a pain, because you have to pull the timing chain assembly off and the cams before you can even get to the head bolts. The engine needs to be supported, as you have to take out both the upper and lower mounts... so it has nothing to hold it in place.

It's probably 8-9 hours labour, if you take it somewhere. But it's not hard - just time consuming... I had a lot of fun doing my first head gasket. Great time to replace other parts for cheap insurance - like the water pump.. since it's timing chain driven.

Any idea mileage wise when the typical 2.4L blows a head gasket?

80-100 Kmi for 2.4L, 60-80 Kmi for 2.3L, ECOs seem to go for a long time...

If you do do it, you might as well buy a whole Cylinder Head rebuild kit, and a new water pump. Flush the coolant out well etc.
