I just bought a cavalier, 01 w/ 122k miles. 5 spd.
the E brake cable will work but i have to pull it up till it nearly hit the end of the housing... I was looking underneath to change the fuel filter the other day and saw the E brake cable, is there any way to tighten it back up or do i have to buy a whole new one ?
also anyone know off hand what size the fuel filter nut is and do i need one of those fuel line disconnect tools for the other side?

EBrake, you probably need to adjust your shoes. Jack up one of the back tires, and spin it. With the e-brake off, there should be just a little resistance. If there is none, it is too loose. To adjust, if the self-adjusters still work, back up at about 15 MPH, and hit the brakes fairly hard. But don't lock them up.
The nut, I used a 13/16ths wrench. The quick disconnect....should be the easy kind. You will see it unclips, and then it will be a U-Shape. Push the U from the "point" back into the line. Takes a little wiggling, but it should come out.

You can. But its slightly more difficult and I don't know exactly how to tell you how to do it.

The cable can not be adjusted. It uses an auto wratching mechanism but that really doesn't do much. The nut on the shoes as mentioned above is your best bet.
If everything is adjusted properly, you may just have to wait. If it's working, don't worry about it. When the shoes wear a little more, the handle will catch the next notch and then it won't pull up as high anymore.
If adjusting your shoes does not fix it, (and drums and shoes are not too worn out) as it happened to me I had to chande two cables one for each side this fix the problem. The guy at the dealer told me there is another cable in the middle, but what usually gets loose are the ones on the side at least in the 96 Z.
well i mean it works. maybe thats just how it is.
