Bent Rod

I noticed a very loud knocking noise coming from inside the engine today. As I drove longer, it got louder. When I push the car to full throttle, it feels like half throttle. I called a few places all of which told me that one of the rods was most likely bent/warped. A mechanic hasn't actually looked at it yet. This is just going off of the symptoms given to them over the phone. I was quoted 1000 dollars for a new camshaft. The car is only worth about 3500, but can't afford another car at the moment. My question is, Is this problem common to J-body's? Also, Would I be better of with a new motor all together?

Sorry, meant to say crankshaft not camshaft.

Well... I've never met a mechanic who could diagnose a car over the phone... so he must be really good! Heck... even some times when I see a car, I don't get it right off the bat... and I know J-bodies pretty well... so.... I'd say you might want a second opinion!

A crankshaft isn't going to cost $1000... and if your crank is gone, it's going to be one of the few I've ever heard of. Now, throwing the #3 rod bearing... much more likely... but you'd probably have a hole in the side of the block to match it... so... yeah, I'd they're just pulling numbers out of thin air...

most shops will try to screw you pretty bad if they think you don't know what you're talking about. I thank most shops high labor rates for giving me the incentive to tackle most projects myself.

IF"" #3 is gone, just find a new motor @ the wreckers for a decent price out of another 99. A decent shop will charge 400 to 500 to drop the new motor in, your looking @ 800 to 1200 depending on how much you pay for the motor itself, I do know getting a motor in the States is a hell of a lot cheaper then what we pay up here in Canada.

Good luck.

Time for another opinion.
If he meant push-rod, then there are no push-rods in that engine.
If he meant connecting rod, then I've never head of a bent/warped one and would definitely need to see it to believe it.
Like Lenko said, breaking them and spinning bearings happen (especially on #3 for some reason).
I've never heard of a crank going either (unless something else damaged it).

Might be a keeper came lose and now the valve is jammed into the head, but that's a pretty wild guess.
