hey guys need some help i went back and looked at some old posts and couldnt find anything like my problem so i hope that doesnt mean its realy bad.... i have a 97 cavi 2.2 and my heat wasnt working right in my car so i put a new thermstat in and flushed the colant, and bled the lines but for some odd reason if you let the car get warmed up and it gets up to running temp which is straight up and down on the gauge i think??? and you take off down the road and get going about 55mph or faster the gauge goes down to about a quater of the way up and the heat isnt hot at all i have no clue what might cause this or what could fix it but i need some help 20 degree weather sucks!! just hoping someone else has this problem or knows how to solve it!!
thanks cale
Seems like a bad heater core thats plugged. I would also take a look at youre coolant hoses, Sometimes blockage happens, Or colapsed hoses are caused as well.
A blocked heater core or collapsed hose normally doesn't make an engine run cold, this restriction on flow may make it run hot. Blocked heater core of heater hose may cause no heat in car, but a cold engine is telling of too much coolant flow through the rad, especially if the temp drops more with higher driving speeds (more air flow). It really sound like your new thermostat is not functioning correctly.
Make sure the rad fan is not running when the engine is at normal temp. It should not come on until the temp gets quite high.
I have kinda the same problem right now. I'll let my car run in the morning to warm up but when i come out maybe after 15-20 mins it will only be 150* or little more. then while drivin down the road it might hit 200* but when i turn the blower on it will drop to 150* or less. Just before fall i replaced the Water pump, coolent, and a new thermasat. Could the thermastate be my problem too?
im not really sure whats wrong with it becuase i tryed a couple different thermasts and that doesnt fix the problem and i dont think any of the lines are cloged either i ran some of the flush threw but the thing im wondering is that the radiator is no servicable so im wondering if thats my problem??? im just worried that it might hurt the motor not gettin up to temp right???? and the not having heat thing kinda sucks when its realy cold
Hi Cale
Did you check here?

Both my '93 2.2's when driving from a cold start move the gauge up to the "Straight up" mark (Initial Thermostat opening) and then they drop to the "Quarter way up" mark where the needle stays while the car is running.
They both have over 200,000kms/ about 124,000 miles and have always indicated this way.
You say "gauge goes down to about a quarter of the way up" based on this
I think your temp is OK.
A way to test the thermostat is opening is to remove the radiator cap, warm up the engine and check there is NO coolant flow until the engine reaches 188/195 deg F, then you should see flow.
My ECM’s signal the Coolant Fan to turn ON at 220 deg F
Have you checked to make sure there is no blockage in the airflow to the heater core and that the heat selector is working correctly.
Alont
the highest with the heat off i can get my temp gauge is alittle over 200* maybe 220* none of the hoses are pinched and my fan isn't running. anything else?
hey thanks guys for the help but how would i check to see if there is blockage in the heater core or the piping just take it off???? and i dont even no where its located on my cavi haha i feel dumb!! just not a problem i have often
thanks guys for everything!!
the rule of theory is to trouble shoot the easy methods first. Thermostat / coolant system flush, Then test the also Engine Temperature Sensor in which tells you pcm what youre ratio's of fuel/ air mixtures to be burned, Also not to allow the pcm to realize its also at the proper run temperature. That also could play a factor,
