Go to autozone and get the code pulled.
When the headlight(s) flash, that usually means that one of your headlight bulbs is burned out. Try and park in front of a reflective surface, turn the car on and see if only one headlight is flashing or if both of them are flashing.

well theres also a little light bulb light on the top right of the display as well.I'll check the headlights. and this one doesnt seem to have DRL's. Its got a manual switch for the lights, weird. my 00 s10 has DRLS

From what you're describing, I'm 99% sure its one of the headlights. The DRLs wont come on if one of the headlights is burned out. Just go turn on your headlights (don't even have to turn the car on) walk in front of the car and see if one of the bulbs is burned out.

both bulbs, including both high beams are working, as well as all turn signals...

You talking about the high beam indicator? Make sure both head lights are fully light. Mine did something simular and my one headlight was acting up internal high resistance in the bulb, let the headlight light but on low beams the one looked like a drl and the other looked like a regualar headlight.
yea its sort of like that, and thelight is not the high beam light, its on the other side.

Its shaped like a Wrench, check the oil and other fluids..
I've just changed the oil... i've noticed my headlights work but they are really dim and they barely shine past 10 feet ahead of the car. when the DRLs come on ( sometimes) only one of them is on. its weird...

Using a multimeter, measure for continuity between the orange wire in the passenger side headlight socket and the fuse for the passenger side headlight.
Post up your findings.
would getting all new bulbs solve this problem? are the 2001 bulbs the 9005 and 9006?

weird thing is the headlights both work, but only one " drl " works, and they seem to come on randomly, not always in light or dark

My suggestion to you is to get a wiring diagram and a multimeter and go to town. I can email you a very good wiring diagram for the headlight circuit in your car if you want.

If the headlights work it doesnt take a rocket scientist to determine there is contiunty. However he says they are dim so there is excessive resistance.
Normally though the ground for the headlights is located near the front of the car. This can overtime get corrosion on it, if he measured the resistance of the ground side of the circuit, and found anything over .2ohm it would mean excessive resistance.

Thank you for chiming in with this little tidbit. It is a good way to start a post full of false information.

You just told him to do the exact same thing I told him to do. The headlight system for an 01 cavalier is a negative logic type system. Components are activated when ground is provided instead of when power is provided like in most circuits. A constant 12V is fed to the light socket, then the multifunction switch provides a ground path for the given light circuit, whether it is high beams or low beams. If the 12V source, i.e. the wire I told him to check for continuity is corroded, then the lights will not function properly. There will be enough of a voltage difference between the corroded wire and the ground path to cause the lights to illuminate dimly, but not enough for the lights to function correctly.
hey i dont want to start any arguments here. thanks for the help guys.
also, i don't really notice much of a difference between high beams and low beams... like at all.
i dont know if the headlights are just a @!#$ty design or if they are aimed down too much or what but i can barely see 30 feet ahead of me at night time. high beams low beams all work, yet i still get that light and the left side light still flashes when i start the car up.
