just bought an 01 cavalier, 5 spd, 122k miles.

I bought the car with check engine light on, and there's also a " repair " light on with a yellow wrench ? what does the repair light mean?


anyhow i had the car scanned and homozone and it was a "catalyst" code. I decided to try new plugs and wires and change the oil, the code didn't go away. What would I want to try next ?


I've also got a suspension problem. i get this high pitched humming sound anything over 40mph
the car came with nearly bald, very cheap tires. so i'm wondering if maybe they're just severaly out of balance or if this is some sort of wheel bearing issue.

Well catalyst code? I believe that means youre CAT converter is shot, And the hummimg sound could be a wheel bearing, When you turn corners is it making it alouder noise like grinding?. I would jackup the front of youre car, Inspect the front tires, Place youre hands on either 9 & 3 position, Try moving the tire up & down motion to see if their is any play looseness in the suspension, If so, movement up & down balljoints are wornout. Side to side movement tie rod ends. Or youre car needs a wheel alignment.

I guess what i want to know though is why the cat has gone bad, i dont want to just get another one and have it happen all over again. is this the only reason for this code going off ? I don't hear any kid of rattling or anything. I had aproblem like this with an old blazer, i took the cat out, inspected it and it was fine. where is the coverter on these cars anyway? i looked underneath and saw what appears to be a couple resonators...
