i need some help troubleshooting...
Monday, November 06, 2006 6:53 PM
just bought an 01 cavalier, 5 spd, 122k miles.

I bought the car with check engine light on, and there's also a " repair " light on with a yellow wrench ? what does the repair light mean?

anyhow i had the car scanned and homozone and it was a "catalyst" code. I decided to try new plugs and wires and change the oil, the code didn't go away. What would I want to try next ?

I've also got a suspension problem. i get this high pitched humming sound anything over 40mph
the car came with nearly bald, very cheap tires. so i'm wondering if maybe they're just severaly out of balance or if this is some sort of wheel bearing issue.

thanks guys

The Catalyst thing is probably a bad 2nd O2 sensor. Expensive at a minimum of ~$70 to replace, so many people don't do it.

Suspension problem sounds like a bearing, maybe also an alignment issue depending on how the tires are worn.

jack up the wheel that the sound is coming from. try to rock the wheel back and forth(in and out) at 12 and 6 (top and bottom). if you feel any play then the wheel bearing is getting worn

so you guys think the cat is alright? which one should i replace first ? the o2 sensor(s)
and which one first ? i dont mind spending the bucks if it's going to help with gas mileage and what not.

probably the downstream one......but usually when the o2 sensor is bad ...it throws a CEL....at least on my 98 it does...not sure bout the newer ones.

What I met to say above...is usually when an o2 sensor is bad it will throw a check engine light code just for that specific problem.

Yes I had a problem with an O2 sensor as well and replaced the same sensor 3-4 times to no avail. I think it had something to do with the header I had because I never got the CEL before the header was put on. Only afterwords.

And see your other thread for the problem with the wrench light. It's one of the headlight bulbs.
