recently the A/C compressor has been making nosie, dull metallic like sound.
BUT, It stops when the AC is turned on? what gives?
That sound means the clutch bearing is worn out. You can replace just the bearing or go ahead and get a new clutch assembly which I would recommend. I just had mine done recently and it's not a hard process, and rather inexspensive. You could also replace the entire compressor, but you're talking more money and you have to purge the refrigerant out and then put it back in.
Thanks for the info.
Ya I'd rather not replace the entire compressor, (its the fiances car), and really would rather not put in too much money into it.
i'll have to pull out the tool kit this weekend.

Blacksunfire... Did you do your own, or have a shop do it? if so how much was it?
Can't find any good instructions for it.
It's shot. Spend the money and do the entire thing. More than likely your compressor is leaking or not far behind. I had the same noise and got all my stuff off E-Bay.

did you replace it all yourself? or have a shop do it?
(i'm being cheap)...
You can do it yourself all except evacuating and charging. Have them suck the system dry and put it back in when done. I bought a complete compressor, dryer, orifice tube and oil kit off E-Bay for $200. The clutch alone in your local store is $100. Do the entire thing and you are good to go for 10 more years.
