Hey you people with noisy 2.2s!
Sunday, October 01, 2006 9:50 PM
Have any of you ever known the noisy 2.2 to come apart if the engine is run in the higher rpm ranges? From time to time I like to let the revs climb a bit in gear, usually no more than 4500-5000. I usually drive about 80mph on the highway with the tach at 3000. I guess what I'm asking is, if I let the rpms climb, will my motor blow up? I'll have to make a video of my engine noise sometime.

PS: It's not easy to type a message like that with a cat laying on both your hands

I am pretty sure everyone who has a 2.2L knows they are noisey, Even my 01 2.2L make a bit of noise, Alot inside the car as well, Just the way the engine is designed. Only way youre motor blow up, Is from no maintance, Beating on it hard, Will cause youre motor to fail, Over years when a motor gets high miles parts just fail due to normal wear, Rat bag youre ride it will burnout the motor. Ive done it few to many times, Lots of wasted money. But hey if you got money to burn why not, (hehe).

Yeah I think it's the timing damper on the chain that causes alot of the noise. I got a new exhaust put on because the stock one rusted apart which quiet the car down immensely. It's not much of a problem but it's annoying and makes the car sound cheap and fragile hearing rattling under the hood all the time. I usually don't hear it at higher rpm. I don't usually revv the car up high and for the most part doesn't see above 2500rpm but about once or twice a week I take her out and beat on her for a bit just to make sure the oil gets hot enough to burn off the tiny bit of water that condenses in it at night and that the sparkplugs and combustion chambers get hot enough to burn out any carbon buildup there might be. Cruise about an hour towards El Paso where the speed limit is 80 and cruise at 95 for 20-30 minutes. This car was one of those program cars which meant it spent it's first 30k miles as a rental car so yeah we all know how it was treated new lol.

I attempted to take a video clip of my car's engine noise this morning, but of course the car didn't want to co-operate, You can hear the noise if you turn the volume up and listen closely. Usually on the first startup of the day the noise is much more noticeable.

If you take any engine to to high of rpms, it will go boom.

Hence the rev limiter.

I hear ya Jason, Ive notice alot of sunfires and Cavaliers 2.2L's do make funny rattling sounds when they get up their in miles, Youre car sounds pretty good for a stocker, Their is a guy at my work his sunfire is in really sad shape for 97, Engine knocks on startup, Also the lifters sound like just want to pop out, Of course really back blue smoke problem, Rings gone, So sad. Hope things work out for you Jason.

GoodLuck.,

Mine's doing that now. 170k and change, all sorts of rattles in the engine. I'd also imagine putting in a flex pipe on my exhaust might help some too...

Yeah your car isn't loud at all. People can tell when I'm coming because of the timing chain rattle...

I just replaced the chain and tensioner on a 97 2.2. The tensioner was completely worn/torn away and all peices were in the oil pan. Of special note was that the timing had actually jumped one tooth - hence the reason why the car had lost some performance. Luckily there was no internal valve/head damage as this is an interferance engine.

My symptons were just as you all report. Very noisy/clangy up to about 2500 RPM, then it sounds not too bad. But just a caution, with the tensioner gone, there is some danger that major damage might be done if the chain jumps some teeth.

Mid 90s 2.2s had a recall for that noise -tick-tick-. It was narrowed down to piston slap; they were rocking in their bores. If your engine wasn't too old, and the noise was loud, you qualified for a free rebuild with all new pistons and rings. Lucky me, I wore in my 2.2 sweetly so the noise is only there sometimes and very quiet when the engine is cold.

Well. Ok. I have a 1998 Z22. (Automatic)She's treated me so well for being flipped. I came on to her the other day and I now notice the "tick tick" only when she's cold like. This could be a small leak in the flex pipe at the least of your worries. So I asked around. Some people are talking about the Rocker Arms need to be tightened. But in order for that they'd have to be dry or worn causing your valves to float. Valves can also float when you have weak valve springs. So then I got the thinking, it could be the lifters not being pumped up enough. I'm not sure. She only started making the tick tick when she's cold at 199 733kms. There could be a multitude of problems that cause the "tick tick"

piston slap iscommonplace on the ln2... mine isnt bad at all after i did my rebuild, and only happens in the winter months (i had all but forgotten about it till yesterday when i start it up and it was like high 40's outside) it goes away quickly enough, i just let it idle for 3-4 minutes before i take off to let the oil warm up some

I wonder if this is similar to the Lifter tap/rattle in the L61's on the 03+'s, I've been noticing that if the engines too cold or the cars revving past the 3K mark the engines got some rattle too it, makes it sound a little cheap IMO, but as long as it runs (and runs well) I'm happy lol
