Acceleration Noise

Hello,

I've been kickin around here unregistered for a year or so and found this site quite useful. I have registered because i have a question that i cant seem to find the answer to any where. Here it is I drive a 5 speed 1997 sunfire gt 2.4l quad 4 as u guys know and i recently did an engine swap because of spontaneous oil pump failure in my old engine which took out my crank bearings and blew a rod out of the bottom of the engine.

Any how this noise i have is a high pitched almost suckin air with a combo of a metal on metal ping. not an engine ping though. this noise was present before the engine swap and i was hoping it was engine related so it would be gone once i swapped. unfortunitly its not it is worse now. it sounds like its in the EGR area and power steering pump area it figured it was the EGR but then i realized it was replaced when i put the new engine in, scratch that. i dont think its a pulley making the noise its definitely from the drivers side of the engine bay. I dont think tis the tranny because it will make the noise in neutral when i rev the engine at the throttle body any how. i found one other person with the same problem in this forum but he never got an answer. do you think this is the power steering pump? or a vacuume leak? i may do a smoke test to see if i can find a vacuume leak. im leaning more towards power steering pump because i have hear it make some pretty sick noises when i turn hard at high speed and i notice i hear a pop in the front end when i turn hard at a low speed say pulling a u-turn.

Any input or ideas are welcome!

Thanks,

Jeff

Power steering pump, I'm thinking. I know that both when I'm utilizing the power steering system it has a bit of a woosh/whine sound, particularly under acceleration; not very noticeable on my car, but on yours it sounds like either the Power steering systems shot or something in the rack is fscked, since the problem skipped generations and I'm assuming you just transfered accessories to the new motor, that'd be my guess.

well the transfer was tricky because i took an engine out of a 1999 and the knock sensor was different so i had to tap the block and put my old one in so the wire harness would match up and then intake is different as well so i had to but a new intake as well. Im seriously leaning towards egr valve because its really acting like it. especially since its getter cold here in Canada and the driving characteristics of my vehicle all show signs that the egr sux

for got to mention the only thing i can think of is maybe i put the knock sensor in just a bit to far and not its picking up false knocks but it still doesnt account for the noise only the drive ability.
