Coolant boiling over again..
Thursday, October 12, 2006 2:36 PM
ok, ive changed the coolant i thought i had a air bubble and thats why my coolant keeps coming out.. but i dont think thats it.

i changed the thermostat, flushed and filled multiple times.. its fine for few days and then slowly gets lower and lower.. its coming out of the blow off valve/hose on the coolant container , generaly when i accelerate..

anyone got any ideas

? does ur heat work properly.Meaning when u drain and refill u leave the resev cap off fill with the heater temp hot and fan on full blast and let if IDLE for at least 10minutes or more the air should escape. The only thing could be a yes faulty new thermstat or ur heater core may have a blockage creating the air not to circulate out of the system. Its really a simple thing its just determining what is actually causing the problem, while u may not be doing the procedure right.Just in case drain the system,Have the heater temp hot,fan on high, fill system, cap off resevoir, start car let it idle to reach norm temp, sometimes using cardboard to block the rad will reduce the time making the car heat up quicker and just check ur fluid level over that time. After 15-20 min should be correct fluid wise and hot heat and no overflow.IF the problem persist tends to make believe ur heater core or thermostat are to blame.Hope this helps and if any can add or correct me please do so.

I forgot to mention if ur hoses are over 4yrs old its recomm by most hose manuf to replace them regardless of appearance bc hoses can calapse and prevent proper circulation or burst under extreme temps hot or cold.I change mine every 4 just for that reason and if urs are over that age I would get new ones it may just be ur problem while u may not see it at the time u do the flush under a load while driving is while it would occur.

Is the cap holding pressure. if its not mainting a seal the system could slowly over heat and boil. I would pressure test the cap to.

first thing I would do is pull each spark plug out, To see if you got any yellow/ whiteish color on youre plug ends, I am thinking youre HG is shot, You said that you heard a boom sound, In which was youre coolant tank, The only could be the pressure from the piston pushing force through youre coolant system. I had HG go just the from the pressure my Rad core blew apart, The rad was only 6 months ago, From high pressure creates alot of psi. You could even get youre motor pressure tested. Narrow it down to the problem. Also could be something as simple as a rad hose colasped, Plugged Rad. I hope things work out for you.

Good Luck.

is changing a head gasket a big job on a 2.2 2000 sunfire?

this cant be head gasket.. my oil that i changed was RICH black.. and the new oil is rich brown.. nothing milky about it.

.. so what i am thinking it may be is a water pump.. BUT it dosent leak.... nothing leaks.. except the COOLant tank boils over.. thats how the coolant escapes..

Check your plugs to see if you have anything on them.....they are easy on that engine. Also, Ron Love, there is no way it could be the thermostat, I think you are mistaken. However, it could be a hose is bad.

ok, checked the spark plugs.. they look totaly fine. nothing weird... no white stuff.. just some carbon deposit

also.. flushed the whole system again.. with one of those flushing "T"'s .. filled it up.. same crap.. after it reaches the 90 mark it starts to boil over ..

BUT no HEAT.. before i was able to get heat.. but now no heat..

also, this is where i am confused if its a head gasket or not.. cause i heard a hissing sound so i looked under the air intake part.. and noticed that the SEAL is kind of bubbling.. ( brownish oily type bubbling) between the engine and the top Valve Cover.. is that the head gasket? anyways but no milky oil and no weird stuff on the spark plugs.. and no heat.

frusturated.. if anyone else has any ideas what i can do let me know.. before i get it to a mechanic

A blown head gasket will not always leak in the oil. Milky oil is ONE of the little check you can do.

It does look like the head gasket. The head gasket is a THIN piece or material BETWEEN the head and the block. Do a compression and and a pressure test and see if the pressure comes out by the oil breather or the coolant reservoir.

That is the valve cover seal/gasket. Real easy to change, but I don't think that is your problem. Change it anyways, takes all of 20 minutes. And they are cheap, I got mine for like $10 at Advance Auto Parts.

Basically to change it, clear off any cables or hoses off the valve cover. You do not have to disconnect them, just get them out of the way. Remove all the bolts around the edge, make sure you get them all, then pull up. Remove the cover with the old gasket, scrap off the old stuff still on the block, making sure it does NOT go into the engine, and replace.

I hope this helps your problem.
